Cool collaboration platforms and products
This isn't needed for design projects, by the way. It's more for sharing ideas. Multimedia functionality would be nice, though.

Applying for a new job posting at company that rejected me already
I was just hired with a smallish organization that had previously rejected me. The first team I interviewed with, despite not offering me the position, recommended me for the second role. There could be a hundred reasons why you didn't get the first job. I say go for it!

How did you (YES, YOU SPECIFICALLY) pay for grad school?
I went to the least expensive program for my subject in NYC, freelanced as a writer and digital strategist (my previous career) part-time, and still ended up taking out federal, unsubsidized direct loans. Direct loans up to $20,500 a year are available for graduate students. Income is not a factor, and direct PLUS loans are available if you need more at a higher interest rate. Because it's imperative to have at least one internship, if not more, in my field, I ended up taking out more than I had… [more]

Freelance to full-time: how to prepare
I saw the previous threads, but the only output there was "lunch breaks" or the value conversations I mentioned. I'm really looking for something more specific around social changes, financial changes, and motivation or guidance on how to adjust my usual non-routine.

To answer 26.2, I will be going into an office every day, with little chance to telecommute regularly, at least at first. There's no clocking in, but the office hours are pretty regular.

How's your Sprint coverage?
I've had Sprint in NYC for five years with no problems. My partner sometimes gets better reception in the subway stations that have cell service with AT&T, but otherwise I've noticed no difference. I expect that Sprint is just behind on rolling out underground service.

How did you meet your significant other?
We met at a party of a mutual friend. We talked about Radiolab and chased a cat around the yard. We were friends for several months before hooking up, and said mutual friend had to do some work in the background to make that happen.

What's the situation at Analog BKNY?
I'm seeing Andy Stott/DemDike Stare/Vatican Shadow there tomorrow night. I can report back, but given the venue is opening with those musicians and it's in Gowanus, I don't think you have anything to worry about. I'm picturing an Issue Project Room-like crowd, actually.

I need a holiday - where do I go?
Pacific Northwest of the U.S., maybe somewhere along the Oregon coast. Manzanita is less touristy and has what you need.

Wherever you go, there you are
I work from home, and sometimes when I get like this I go down Soundcloud or Spotify wormholes. Just pick an artist you don't typically listen to, look for related music, and go down a few random paths for awhile.

Don't you want me, baby?
Well, there definitely appears to be a consensus. Thank you all. I suppose my response to this situation is the result of a bruised ego, and a feeling that I wouldn't have the support of potential coworkers because I'm likely not the first choice. I see, though, that it's important to finish the process for the many reasons listed here. And just for the record, I'm definitely not putting all my eggs in one basket. I've been networking very hard and applying to appropriate jobs the past few… [more]

"Underground" comedy shows in NYC?
Not exactly "underground," but Jessica Williams's Two Dope Queens show on Wednesdays at Union Hall, Wyatt Cenac's Night Train show on Mondays at Littlefield, regular Friday nights at Niagara, and random stuff at Karma Bar and Lounge.

Short trip to Mexico City, ideas welcome!
MUJAM, a giant toy museum, is impressive and convenient to Zona Rosa. See if you can get one of the employees to take you up to the roof to check out the graffiti.

I'm also a fan of Museo Tamayo, the contemporary arts museum.

What are some of the best karaoke events near you?
My favorite karaoke night had a KJ and a hype guy. He'd dance, high-five the singers, sing backup occasionally. It's random, but it worked really well and got people excited.

What kind of projector do I need?
My partner and I bought the Epson VS330 via Amazon a year or so ago for around $400 or $500, after looking at a ton of reviews. Having had a number of projectors in the past, I think that's the price point where you get the most bang for your buck. We love the projector. It's definitely bright enough for daytime use, and most importantly the bulbs are relatively inexpensive (something to consider when choosing a projector).

Gentrification question
Detroit and other rust belt cities are still bleeding people. There's some work going on in those cities to revitalize their downtowns, but it's fairly limited as far as I understand.

And while many global cities are experiencing gentrification on some level, they didn't have the massive suburbanization and white flight seen in the U.S in the middle of last century. The gentrification that North America is experiencing is fairly unique.

Six Month NYC Moving Plan
You have to provide a tremendous amount of paper work when applying for an apartment. In addition to the application, you need two years' tax returns, a letter of employment, a recent paystub, references, and other things I'm forgetting at the moment. I had a folder with me with all of this when I went apartment hunting, along with my checkbook.

Also, there is no "thinking about it." Be prepared to make a decision about an apartment right there, on site.… [more]

Was there a happy ending, being the old person in that college class?
I don't have a lot of specific advice, but I went back to school for urban planning at 36 (I'm 37 now, with two semesters to go), and so far, so good. I'm not even the oldest in the program. I'm much more confident in my work than I was as an undergrad and haven't had a problem getting relevant internships.

Can you point me to a really good endocrinologist in NYC?
I see Andrew Martorella with Weill Cornell on the UES. He indeed does not take insurance, but has worked with me in the past to minimize visits. He also actually listens instead of just looking at lab results.

Where can a dairy-free celiac and a gluten-free vegetarian eat in NYC?
Sun in Bloom, which has a location in Park Slope, Brooklyn as well as Tribeca. They have what you need on menu and are great for brunch.

What are the best vegan restaurants in New York?
Several vegan fast casual places have opened up in the past month or so. One is By Chloe, but I haven't been there yet.

Of all the Blossom locations, Blossom on Carmine in the West Village is the best.

And you may want to check out the Vegan Shop-Up pop-up market.

wellbutrin worries
I have an irritable form of depression and anxiety, and while Wellbutrin hasn't helped with the irritability, it hasn't really made it worse. I take a small dose of Abilify with it to smooth things out.

Moving Cross Country -- How is it done?
I used ABF to move from Texas to NYC. It isn't cheap, but it's less expensive than cross-country movers or PODS. Because there was no where to put the cubes on the street, we hired local movers to pick up the cubes at the ABF warehouse in Queens and deliver our stuff to us.

What do I search to find a photoshop specialist who makes fake things?
You're making "mock-ups for a pitch." A graphic designer with Illustrator and Photoshop skills should be able to do this.

How common are trust funds?
There's this article from a few years back that says 40% of the real estate applications in Williamsburg involve a down payment from parents. I always thought the bitching about trust fund kids was a bit dramatic, and that there couldn't be that many trust fund kids or kids living on their parents' dime. But damn, 40% is a lot.

Inbred instruction
I went to the same elementary school where my mom was a teacher, and it was easily the worst part of my childhood. The main problem was that my teachers would go straight to my mother when I made a bad grade, misbehaved, or said something stupid. This made me uptight and paranoid. Your wife shouldn't entertain these conversations.

NYC subway trains stink, mold?
Maybe it's because the 7 runs above ground and get fresher air? 6 might be cleaner because the cars are newer than the ones used on the N line. Fewer people ride the E than the F.

Key West (or??????) Hotel/Resort
My boyfriend and I stayed at the Key Lime Inn a couple of years ago. It's a pretty affordable collection of little cabins. Very nice and really close to Duval. BlerpityBloop is right, though. A week is a long time. Maybe split the time between Miami and a town or two in the Keys.

Stuff to do: karaoke, drinking, eating, cat show and pier, riding scooters or bikes, drag shows, sailing, Fort Taylor

Need to park a motorcycle for 2 weeks (continuously) this July in NYC.
Don't worry about alternate side parking. I have a scooter that I park around the corner from my apartment in Park Slope. I forget to move it all the time, and have only gotten a ticket on a couple of occasions. Even if you do get a ticket, it's $65, which is cheaper than storage.

Some next, but cautious, steps for beginner scooterists?
I have a Genuine Buddy 125cc, and it is such a workhorse and an amazingly easy ride. I can tell the difference between it and even my boyfriend's 110cc Symba, which was sadly stolen (no lock, in Brooklyn at night). Really, though, if I could have any scooter, it'd be the Genuine Stella 150cc four-stroke. Those things look rad and get like 100 mpg. 50cc scooters are toys, IMHO.

If you've taken the motorcycle safety class, you already have your license, so go for a little… [more]
