Applebies are a species of ground-dwelling creatures first appearing as enemies in Wario Land 3 and as a character in Dr. Mario 64. Applebies are usually found looking out of holes in either walls or the ground, which generally leaves their bodies partially obscured. In the instances their full body is visible (when knocked out of a hole), their lower body is seen to end in a tail, with no hind limbs. Applebies greatly resemble mole lizards in appearance and habitat. Applebies are associated with apples in all of their appearances, and is what their name is derived from.

History[edit]

Wario Land 3[edit]

In Wario Land 3, Applebies are stationary enemies. They will look around from above, and if they see Wario, they will emerge from the hole to throw an apple and then make a face, before retracting back into it. When an apple is caught by Wario, he will eat it and become Fat Wario. If Wario is above an Appleby, they will not see him and thus will not pop out. If Wario bumps into them, they will retract into their hiding hole without throwing an apple. They can be defeated by using a Dash Attack, a Smash Attack, or touch them with an invincible reaction like Vampire Wario. Besides Appleby, the Doughnuteer can also cause the Fat Wario reaction, though they use doughnuts instead.

Applebies appear in the following levels, in the following quantities:

Dr. Mario 64[edit]

An Applely appears in Dr. Mario 64. In Story mode, Wario faces him as his fourth opponent. During the events of the pursuit of Mad Scienstein by both Dr. Mario and Wario, Appleby is happily holding an apple over his head until Mad Scienstein knocks it off, followed by Dr. Mario kicking it away as he runs, causing him to be saddened. Wario, who is not far behind, is revealed to have eaten the apple that flew off (though he didn't become Fat Wario), causing Appleby to be angry at him for his actions, thus triggering the battle. As an opponent in Vs. mode, Appleby has the second-lowest AI level, tying with Silky, Jellybob, and Octo.
