Scam Alert! Gold Bar Scam: Montgomery County, MD
State's Attorney John McCarthy joined with Montgomery County Police, the FBI, and Department of Homeland Security for a news conference on August 12, 2024, to discuss the "Gold Bar Scam."
The scam often begins with fake pop-up ads on your computer or with phone calls where the scammers impersonate government officials. Scammers may tell you that your identity has been compromised and to protect your assets you need to immediately convert your money into gold bars and hand it over to them for “safe keeping.” Many of the victims are seniors, so we ask that you share this information with any aging adults in your life.
We currently have four criminal cases involving five defendants in Montgomery County, but there are additional cases under investigation. In total, there are about 20 total reported cases involving MILLIONS of dollars stolen. Please view the Joint News Conference regarding the Gold Bar Scam.
