Artificial intelligence is transforming how we live, work, and conduct scientific research. Today, we partnered with the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Laboratories to hold a first-of-its-kind “1,000 Scientists AI Jam Session” that brought together more than 1,000 scientists to explore how AI can accelerate scientific discovery. During Friday’s event, researchers across nine national labs—Argonne National Laboratory, Berkeley Lab, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Idaho National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL)—tested advanced AI reasoning models, including OpenAI o3-mini, on thousands of scientific challenges in fields ranging from energy and physics to biology and medicine. U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright joined OpenAI President and Co-Founder Greg Brockman at Tennessee’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory to meet with participating researchers and emphasize AI’s critical role in the future of science, national security, and America’s global competitiveness. Secretary Wright told the scientists that AI has the potential to increase life expectancy, lead to the development of new drugs, and fuel innovation by allowing scientists to solve problems that were seen as intractable. Greg shared that he hoped AI would make scientists “10 times or 100 times more effective” at their work in the coming years. Today’s event builds on a long-standing tradition of the U.S. government working with companies to drive innovation, create jobs, fuel economic growth, and strengthen national security. We’re grateful to all the scientists who participated in today’s jam session, and look forward to continuing our work with the national labs to strengthen U.S. leadership in both AI and scientific discovery. 1,400 scientists Nine national labs One shared goal: partnering with the government to advance AI-driven scientific discovery In a first-of-its-kind event, the US National Laboratories and OpenAI brought together over 1,400 scientists across nine national labs for a “1,000 Scientist AI Jam Session” today — a deep dive into how AI can accelerate breakthroughs that keep the US at the forefront of global scientific innovation From Argonne to Oak Ridge, Berkeley to Livermore, researchers put OpenAI’s latest AI models, including o3-mini, to the test — applying them to some of the world’s toughest scientific challenges. The goal? To improve future AI systems so that they are built with scientists’ needs in mind. As Rick Stevens, Associate Director of Argonne National Laboratory put it: it’s like a bunch of jazz musicians coming together and jamming to figure out scientific problems with AI That is a powerful jam session America has historically thrived when the public and private sectors worked together for the common good. From the automobile to the internet — US led ingenuity has generated economic growth that drove progress and expanded opportunities and freedoms However, collaboration goes beyond the typical public-private partnerships, forming a “common sector” where deep tech is integrated into research from the start to accelerate discovery in the Age of intelligence We believe that by helping scientists achieve breakthroughs, AI can benefit the greatest number of people I am working in AI partly because I think we’ll see this technology translated into incredible progress in children' s education; health care outcomes; and scientific progress At Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright and OpenAI Co-Founder and President Greg Brockman discussed how AI can strengthen US leadership in science and technology This event builds on OpenAI’s ongoing partnership with the national labs, including deploying advanced reasoning models on Nvidia’s supercomputer at Los Alamos and exploring how multimodal AI can safely advance biosciences. It also continues the long-standing tradition of public-private partnership in the US. Most importantly, it reinforces why democratic AI must win out over autocratic AI in the global competition between the US and China over AI’s future A special thank you to Secretary Wright, Rick Stevens, Courtney Corley, Brian Spears, and Prasanna Balaprakash for leading this effort and finding time to participate in the discussions. And a huge shoutout to event maestro James Donovan and my other incredible colleagues who made this event possible: Felipe Millon, Lane Dilg, Katrina Mulligan, Michelle (Bailhe) Fradin, Alex Carney, Aaron Wilkowitz, Mohammed H., and Aaron Jaech Stay tuned for a report from the national labs summarizing key findings on how AI should be used by the scientific community

Today we’re releasing a research preview of GPT-4.5—our largest and best model for chat yet. Rolling out now to all ChatGPT Pro users, followed by Plus and Team users next week, then Enterprise and Edu users the following week. Early testing shows that interacting with GPT-4.5 feels more natural. Its broader knowledge base, improved ability to follow user intent, and greater “EQ” make it useful for tasks like improving writing, programming, and solving practical problems.

Silicon Valley – Center of the universe? (twinned with DC maybe…). There’s no better place for a week of conversations around #AI and other emerging technologies with partners, clients and investors. AI is a catalyst for transformational change— maybe akin to electricity, and it’s estimated to generate $32 trillion in global GDP growth by 2030. We see enormous near- and long-term potential for AI at BNY- vast trove of data assets to develop unique insights and solutions that deliver value for clients, and a tech that can empower our teams as a force multiplier for productivity. This week we were very pleased to announce a new collaboration with OpenAI that will help accelerate our #AI adoption. Read more in The Wall Street Journal: https://lnkd.in/egJavYNc I’m proud of the progress we’ve already made with AI, and the amazing team. The energy this week makes me even more excited for the opportunity on the horizon.
