Yeah, I'm the same, but I am starting to slowly get back into post rock as I skirt the lines of a mid-life crisis. I think this nostalgia/emotional heft you mentioned is what makes it possible to revisit and sit with the Ten Rapid --> Happy Songs... stretch of albums for me. A lot of their later stuff doesn't really click with me, except Rave Tapes because my office mate used to blast it a lot the year it came out. In other words, Mogwai is nostalgia core.

I have to admit the mid life crisis post rock comeback thing got me as well. Damn.

I have been listening to Godspeed! a lot lately as well. I'm going to embrace it. Maybe you should too, but I recommend not calling it "our music" the way people my (our) parents' age do with classic rock.

I hate saying this but the new album is so boring and inoffensive - nothing excites me about their music anymore. They were one of my favourite bands, but post-John Cummings their music has become pretty bland and predictable.

their name is so much bigger than their music, imo. once again I was looking forward to their new album and once again I am disappointed. it's the same with every album: there are 3-4 really great songs, the rest is shallow and generic or even unnerving. consequently, it's the same with "the bad fire". "God Gets You Back", "Hi Chaos" and "If You Find This World Bad, You Should See Some Of The Others" are truly awesome songs and I am very thankful for them. but I expect an album from a huge name in the post-rock genre like mogwai to be a holistic experience of beauty and despair, so to say. floating, immersive, destructive, melancholic, hopeful. why are they making it so hard to enjoy them? do they want to be "different" or are they just incapable? I am angry. "mr. beast" is one of the albums that brought me to this genre. nowadays there are so many lovely post-rock bands with only a fraction of the listeners mogwai have that are so much better.. mogwai are so fucking overrated.

Completely agree, overall their last 3 albums post-John Cummings have had a massive drop in quality and variety. There's been the odd song that has been good, but apart from that a pretty big drop in quality from their earlier output. Still a great band live though of course, seen them 6 times with the last time being in 2023.

Gotta' be Ten Rapid + YT + CODY for me. Or maybe even YT + CODY + EP+6. Either combo is more than acceptable. 👌

What does this mean? 🤨 I think I hear Ride more than anything else in this new single.

Especially when Dom's bass creeps in early and jostles the hair right off of Stuart's head: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNVua-kot5A

That's great. My maths teacher put me onto Neil Young. Some teachers you never forget.

I only hope I can have that kind of impact on someone in their formative years.

They had a period where they slagged them in the press and even made "Blur are Shite" T-shirts. I don't think rivalry was the right word to use since I never heard or read anything about Blur responding to it.
