plants, animals, fungi, and microbes of North America and the world. Our mission is to communicate a comprehensive taxonomy of global species that enables biodiversity information to be discovered, indexed, and connected across all human endeavors. The ITIS program partners with specialists from around the world to assemble scientific names and their taxonomic relationships. ITIS is an Associate Participant of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and a partner and contributor to the Catalogue of Life (COL) and ChecklistBank which are the basis of the GBIF Backbone Taxonomy.
