When Maddie left 9-1-1 followed by Chimney, there was a lot of concern among viewers that the characters wouldn't return. In season 5, Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Chimney (Kenneth Choi) left their home and friends in Los Angeles, taking an extended break before returning nine episodes later no longer a couple. Maddie's last prior appearance was in season 5, episode 3, "Desperate Measures," with Chimney leaving to find her in episode 4, "Home and Away." While there were production reasons for the break, namely Jennifer Love Hewitt's own pregnancy, the in-universe 9-1-1 storyline to justify it ended up being one of its most realistic plot arcs an honest portrayal of postpartum depression.
Maddie has had a hard journey since she replaced Connie Britton's Abby. After giving birth to their daughter Jee-Yun at the end of season 4, Maddie began experiencing post-partum depression. This continued into season 5, resulting in her leaving her...

Hulu’s list of new releases for June 2021 is highlighted by a host of useful library titles and one fascinating original film.
The original film in question is the one that lends its delightful photo of Pierce Brosnan delivering a baby to this post. False Positive stars and was written by Ilana Glazer (Broad City). It sounds like a really fun, creepy time with a synopsis that reads: “After months of trying and failing to get pregnant, Lucy (Glazer) and Adrian (Justin Theroux) finally find their dream fertility doctor in the illustrious Dr. Hindle (Pierce Brosnan). But after becoming pregnant with a healthy baby girl, Lucy begins to notice something sinister through Hindle’s gleaming charm, and she sets out to uncover the unsettling truth about him, and her own “birth story.” Cool!
Hulu’s other original offerings aren’t too inspiring this month. Only Love, Victor season 2 on June 11 moves the needle much.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between.
Today we talk about Pittsburgh’s own Michael Keaton. Born Michael Douglas, then forced to change his name because there was, ahem, already a Michael Douglas in the Screen Actors Guild, Keaton sparked to stardom immediately in Ron Howard’s Night Shift, then quickly followed it up with the surprise hit Mr. Mom. His harnessing of chaotic energy within the body of an every-man is a true wonder to behold. To delve in Keaton’s career we bring in the big guns: Andrew Jupin, one of the co-hosts of the We Hate Movies podcast and the senior film programmer at the Jacob Burns Film Center.

Mubi's retrospective Spotlight on Barbet Schroeder is showing summer 2020 - spring 2021.Above: Barbet SchroederTrying to situate Barbet Schroeder on the film world-trend-map of the past six decades can be a tricky task. Coming on the scene as part of the MacMahonist group1, writing for Cahiers du cinéma mostly about American cinema in the late 1950s, Schroeder should be correctly considered a direct descendant of the politique des auteur. However, unlike other acknowledged “sons” of the New Wave, such as Jean Eustache and Philippe Garrel, this inheritance was not directly passed on to Schroeder when he began producing-directing his own stories, following the steps of his much admired Otto Preminger—in fact, his affective bonds with Cahiers didn’t protect him from the occasional scolding from the magazine’s “third-generation” critics: Serge Daney accused Schroeder of turning the subject of his documentary General Idi Amin Dada: A Self Portrait (1974) into a stereotype,...

Celebrating some of the best theatermakers working in New York City today, the nominations were announced by Lucille Lortel Award winners Rachel Bay Jones and Steven Pasquale. This year’s nominations spread the love between dazzling Off-Broadway fare including “Kpop,” “Bella: An American Tale,” “Mary Jane,” and more. “Kpop,” from Ars Nova, Ma-Yi Theater, and the Woodshed Collective, led the way with nine nods; stars James Seol, Ashley Park, Jason Tam, and Vanessa Kai were all nominated in each of the musical acting categories. “Desperate Measures,” “Hundred Days,” “Jerry Springer – The Opera,” and “Bella: An American Tale” joined “Kpop” in the Outstanding Musical category. The Brave is back!
The tension was not lacking on The Brave Season 1 Episode 10 as the team had to work fast to save Jaz from an ultimate death at the hands of the Iranian captors.
When we last left Jaz, she got caught before she could escape out the window. Dalton and Preach were waiting for her, and what I loved about the opening scene was Dalton's reaction. He could not believe what had happened, and the impact was captured perfectly.
Even though we didn't hear him screaming, the silence of the scene said everything we needed to know as to how he was feeling. Shock. Fury. Fear. Desperation.
It would have been too easy (and unbelievable) if Dalton would have gotten his wish and the car would have started, so he could have saved Jaz before she left the garage with her captors. Even though we knew he wasn't...

Before we plunge into the deep end of movie awards season, which tends to consume our every waking moment from right now through Oscar night each year, a wee theater break.
Though we love movies with all our hearts, the one thing live-action movies don't really have an equivalent of is the grand theatrical tradition of the musical comedy. I'm talking inspired silliness as goddamn raison d'etre. I recently fell hard for Desperate Measures, a hilarious wild west riff on Shakespeare's Measure for Measure. The show has now been extended three times at the York Theatre in Manhattan and will close on New Year's Eve so get to it! (The York specializes in helping develop new musicals and I'm happy to call attention to this noble cause as a bonafide fanatic of the genre.)

Following a massive online backlash, Square Enix and Eidos Montreal have scrapped the 'Augment Your Pre-Order' promotional stunt for the highly anticipated upcoming video game "Deus Ex: Mankind Divided".
'Augment Your Pre-Order' tried to make a community effort out of pre-orders. Five tiers of rewards would have been unlocked over time as more and more players throughout the globe reserved copies of the game - and players would choose between one of several rewards.
Making the announcement of the program's scrapping on the game's official site, Square Enix says:
"When it was first conceived, we wanted the program to give you more choice about what you received in terms of pre-order incentives - because we've seen in the past that when we choose those packages ourselves, and split them across regions, it has caused frustration. We quickly noticed that this approach created even more frustration than before, resulting in a resounding amount of negative feedback.

Fear the Walking Dead is, quite literally, about to go viral.

'Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation' star Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt 'Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation' trailer: Movie stunt combo "Desperate times. Desperate measures," says Tom Cruise aka Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation trailer aka the Mission: Impossible 5 and/or MI5 trailer. Whatever you call it, that particular line could be read in a number of ways: Tom Cruise's superstardom is in the doldrums – at least that's what we hear from those who see reality only through U.S.-focused lenses – and he needs all the box-office help he can get. Hence, MI5. Hollywood is in dire need of a mammoth domestic blockbuster following a year of mediocre-performing tentpoles at the U.S. box office. Hence, MI5. The world's socioeconomic fabric is about to unravel. Hence, MI5 – so humankind can go with a bang. Not only with a bang, but with mirth as well.

Some are already trying to figure out the "Birdman" backlash after the film dropped to raves in Venice, but sometimes the hype is justified, and make no mistake about it: Alejandro González Iñárritu's manic dissection of an artist desperate for fulfillment outside of commercial success is an out-and-out masterpiece. We wrote some time ago about how the film would be constructed to resemble a single take, and watching things unfold at the Werner Herzog Theater Saturday night, I was definitely paying close attention to that. I counted maybe 12 or 13 cuts that were obvious, but there are surely a number of invisible digital edits throughout (much like how the great "single-take" car scene from Alfonso Cuarón's "Children of Men" was assembled, though you'd never know it). The first shot of the film, honest to God, feels like a 30 minute single tracking shot, but there had to be a digital cut in there somewhere.

We look at 20 former A-list actors, and the interesting film choices they've made...
There comes a time in every A-list actor's life when they gather their thoughts and take a step back into smaller budget or more leftfield fare - and for a variety of reasons. They may want to work with a certain director or an emerging directing talent. They might be taken by a fantastic script. They might fancy a new artistic direction. They may even have a spiritual epiphany and decide to eschew Hollywood and all its decadent trappings, or they may simply just not have a choice, since the big roles have long since dried up for them.
The reason for this list then, is to look at some of those shining lights, the household names, and at the films they took up as proof of their artistic integrity.

Dexter, Season 8, Episode 12, ‘Remember the Monsters?’
Written By Scott Buck & Manny Coto
Directed By Steve Shill
Airs Sundays, 8pm on Showtime
When you begin dreading the final episode of a show you love, it should really be an understandable reaction, one born out of fear and sadness that it is coming to end. Thanks to a collective brain melting session in the offices of Showtime’s Dexter however, this dread has come about due to the pessimistic angst that the closing chapter, the final lines, will be utterly botched and thus conclude the tainting of a once grand story with amateur nonsense. There’s no doubting that the awful quality of Season Eight has left an indelible mark, meaning that anyone going into the grand finale should be wary of being hopeful. Bearing no expectations is probably the best way to go into ‘Remember the Monsters’. Doing that, perversely, means...

Not many award shows can make a combination of mermen, Korean pop stars and "Chavril" work, but that's exactly what the 2013 Much Music Video Awards did Sunday night in front of a sectioned-off block in downtown Toronto.
Hundreds of fans gathered in front of the MuchMusic building to catch this year's performers and presenters hit the red carpet as well as take to the stage in a two-hour popularity contest celebrating a marriage of video and music.
South Korea's Psy made his debut as this year's co-host and kicked the show off with his renowned hit 'Gangnam Style'. The K-Pop sensation also took home an Mmva for "Viral Video of The Year" with the same song, only to outdo his iconic horse dance with his personal twist on Beyonce's 'Single Ladies'. But the pop sensation, who’s causing friction abroad with his bad boy persona and run-ins with Hollywood neighbors, is still tops with fellow Canadians. He beat out homegrown competition from fellow Canadians Carly Rae Jepsen, deadmau5, Drake and rockers Marianas Trench, which earlier in the evening won for best pop video of the year for Desperate Measures.
