Producer Eric Newman and wife Dana Newman are doubling down on their commitment to Venice Community Housing. The couple, longtime supporters of the organization, made a $500,000 donation to the nonprofit as a way to support affordable housing initiatives.

Netflix announced Wednesday that the Oscar-winning film legend will star in and executive-produce his first television project, the conspiracy thriller limited series “Zero Day,” from creators Eric Newman (“Narcos”) and Noah Oppenheim (“Jackie”).

“‘Zero Day’ asks the question on everyone’s mind — how do we find truth in a world in crisis, one seemingly being torn apart by forces outside our control?” goes the official logline for the series. “And in an era rife with conspiracy theory and subterfuge, how much of those forces are products of our own doing, perhaps even of our own imagining?”

Green will write and helm the film about two women struggling to escape from a deranged college professor who holds them hostage on a remote sunflower farm. Green and Craig Flores will produce the project unveiled by Nathan Kahane, president of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, which is eyeing a summer start for production.

Besides the HBO series Lovecraft Country, Green’s upcoming credits include writing and producing the feature film The Mother for Netflix. Recent credits for Smollett include Birds of Prey, the Joseph Kosinski sci-fi film Spiderhead, and Lou, which she executive produced on and starred in opposite Allison Janney.

Sometimes it pays to have a superhero in the house. On Friday, Dec. 9, Chris Hemsworth shared a video of his wife, model and actor Elsa Pataky, sitting on his shoulders in order to put the star on their enormous Christmas tree on Instagram. Since the Thor actor is over six feet tall, you might think Pataky could easily reach the top, but as the Marvel actor's video shows, putting the finishing touch on their tree was no easy task.

While it's unclear exactly how tall the couple's tree is, Pataky still couldn't reach the top while sitting on her husband's shoulders. Undeterred, Hemsworth gets creative as he first attempts to jump and then gets on his tiptoes to help his wife reach the top. Actor Chris Hemsworth recently learned that he has two copies of a gene that’s known to increase the chance of a late-life Alzheimer’s diagnosis. He was filming the National Geographic series Limitless, which features several episodes of Hemsworth undertaking physical tests that will test the human body and learning from experts about new studies pertaining to combatting aging.

In the episode, a doctor explained to Hemsworth that he has “probably somewhere between eight and ten times higher” a chance to develop Alzheimer’s disease in his life. “The idea that I won’t be able to remember to live the life I’ve experienced or my wife, my kids, this is probably my biggest fear,” Hemsworth admitted on the show after hearing the news.

Throughout the episode, he also explored what some studies have said helps your chance of staving it off, including diet and exercise and “new intellectual challenges.

Miles Teller is reflecting on his high-flying summer in the promos for Saturday Night Live’s upcoming season 48 premiere.

The Top Gun: Maverick star makes his debut as host of the long-running NBC comedy series on Saturday’s episode, which also features musical guest Kendrick Lamar. In video clips shared ahead of the premiere, SNL castmember and Bros actor Bowen Yang asks Teller to assess his summer.

“Really great,” Teller responds. This leads Yang to gripe, “Mine was a bust, but whatever. I’m happy to be back.”

Teller continues, “Yeah, I had a hit movie.” But Yang quickly cuts him off and is clearly more interested in sharing details of his own experiences, including claiming that his therapist describes him as having “emotional inertia.”

"Saturday Night Live" will return to NBC for its 48th season starting on October 1, 2022. There's been a lot of activity behind the scenes with the loss of eight total cast members. The end of season 47 saw the exit of Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Kyle Mooney, and Pete Davidson. More recently, series regulars Alex Moffatt and Melissa Villaseñor left the series along with featured player Aristotle Athari. Finally, this week brought news that "Popstar" co-star Chris Redd was leaving after five seasons on the series. 

But the show must go on, and along with four new featured players joining the series, "SNL" has officially announced who will be hosting the first three episodes out of the gate for season 48. Life Is Beautiful kicked off on Friday in the heart of Las Vegas, with thousands of festival-goers scurrying to the Sin City for the buzzy three-day show that turns Vegas’s eclectic downtown into a psychedelic desert amusement park.

The Life Is Beautiful footprint takes up 18 blocks of downtown Las Vegas, an area of town once known for cheap drinks, seedy motels and a string of pawn shops. However, this slice of Vegas has turned into a hipster haven known for funky art installations, home-grown farm-to-table restaurants and, cheap drinks.

Framestore has tapped “Top Gun: Maverick” VFX supervisor Ryan Tudhope as one of its newest creative director.

Tudhope, who is a member of the Television Academy and AMPAS, co-founded VFX studio Atomic Fiction, where he was also CEO. The studio had over 350 employees across L.A. and Montreal, working on projects including “Deadpool,” “Rogue One” and “Game of Thrones.”

Tudhope’s experience spans two and a half decades, in which he has worked on over fifty feature film and episodic projects including “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” for Amazon Studios and “Spiderhead,” working as production-side VFX supervisor alongside director Joseph Kosinski. He was nominated for an Emmy for his work on “Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey.”

Among the projects Framestore has recently worked on or is currently working on are “The Little Mermaid,” “The Sandman” and “Thor: Love and Thunder.”

No one could have predicted that "Top Gun: Maverick," a sequel to a nearly 40-year-old movie, would wind up becoming not only the biggest movie of the summer, but the biggest movie of 2022 so far, pulling in 679 million domestic (more than "Avengers: Infinity War") and counting. Miles Teller has signed on to star in and executive produce “The Gorge” for “The Black Phone” director Scott Derrickson.

The film, which has been described as a high-action, genre-bending love story, will see the “Top Gun: Maverick” star reteam with one of the blockbuster’s producers, Skydance Media.

Derrickson is coming off of the smash success of “The Black Phone,” which has raked in over 155 million at the global box office. He will direct from a spec script penned by “The Tomorrow War” writer Zach Dean.

That’s one of the key takeaways from a new report from analytics firm Samba TV. The second-quarter installment of The State of Viewership analyzes some 24 billion hours of linear and streaming viewing in the U.S. (See select charts below.)

The company found significant front-loading of viewership for marquee titles. By the 30th day top titles were available, they had generated 86 of their 50-day viewership. About 2.9 million households watched Stranger Things Season 4 in its first four days online, with the total rising to 4.6 million households by Day 15.

“Top Gun: Maverick” is the year’s biggest movie by a considerable margin, both in terms of box office and in the way it captured the cultural zeitgeist, and it now finally has a home video release date and bonus features details.

The long-awaited sequel, made more than three decades after the original, was #2 at the domestic box office just this weekend and it was originally released in theaters back in late May. Gosling, who’s always likable even when a little smug, just can’t help seeming above the whole enterprise, no matter how many nice clothes he’s given the opportunity to wear.

It’s getting easier to predict which movies will become seemingly out-of-nowhere successes on Netflix. While on the television side of the spectrum, flashy new series or returning hits routinely become the top streaming shows, the calculus doesn’t always add up the same way for the streamer’s film library. For instance, this week one of the top films on Netflix was 2018’s 12 Strong, a Chris Hemsworth-led war film set in Afghanistan in the immediate aftermath of 9/11.

Netflix's "Spiderhead" focuses on a top secret facility where convicted felons volunteer for drug trials to escape time in a traditional prison. The film offers a roller coaster ride of emotions thanks to tactless comments, awkward dancing, and handy dandy MobiPacks provided by Steve Abnesti (Chris Hemsworth).
