Netflix has often been a venue for theatrical flops to find new life, and it's currently providing that service for a 2024 horror film you likely missed. "Afraid" was Blumhouse's third of five horror movies this year, following "Night Swim" and "Imaginary" and preceding "Speak No Evil" and "House of Spoils." There are more duds than hits in that batch, making 2024 a rough year for Blumhouse. "Afraid" (stylized occasionally as "AfrAId") currently holding an abysmal 22% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes. At 55%, the audience score is much better, but still not great.
But hey, sometimes when you're scrolling Netflix late at night, all you want is a ridiculous, silly horror flick to throw on and pass the time with. At the time of this writing, "Afraid" is residing in the number seven spot in Netflix's daily Top 10 movies for the United States (via FlixPatrol). A new look at Blumhouse’s upcoming creature feature Wolf Man gives us a longer look at a couple of scenes.
Leigh Whannell has dubbed his upcoming werewolf project for Blumhouse as a ‘straight-up horror movie’ and we’re very much behind that idea. Whilst twisting the classic Wolfman tale in the direction of comedy or drama has given us some interesting and enjoyable takes on the hairy monster over the years, one of the things we love about Whannell’s films is how he commits to the bite.
Perhaps 2018’s Upgrade is the best example of this, an old-fashioned action thriller with a gloss coat of splatterpunk violence applied, but a film that is entirely unironic in its presentation and an earnest take on the material. Considering Blumhouse’s January releases can veer wildly in tone – from the comic silliness of M3GAN to the schlocky mock drama of Night Swim,...

Traditional horror movies with an easy-to-follow plot, relatable characters, and a healthy dose of scares are probably every horror fan’s comfort food. That’s because, when it comes to horror, the experimental and abstract genre pieces can be very hit or miss. In 2024 alone, I have come across In A Violent Nature, and I loved its take on the slasher subgenre. Bramayugam’s exploration of casteism and classism on a monochrome canvas was excellent. Oddity’s portrayal of revenge was haunting. And Outside’s use of the zombie subgenre to talk about the patriarchy was worthy of all the applause in the world. Then you have movies like Night Swim, The Devil’s Bath, Consumed, Baghead, The Hangman, Munjya, MadS, Mr. Crocket, and Don’t Move, which undoubtedly have a good concept at their core, but the execution is simply too muddled to be impactful. I am sad to say that...

For horror fans, October is sacred. Commonfolk wear costumes, visit haunted attractions, and celebrate all things festively creepy en masse. Television channels, streaming platforms, and theaters dedicate overwhelming program blocks of Halloween favorites. Horror is en vogue, but with that attention comes the invariable onslaught of taste-maker trades showing their whole-ass behinds. Those who treat horror as unworthy for 11 other calendar months suddenly have opinions about horror's "resurgence," "death," or incoming "fatigue." It's a clockwork tradition that riles internet hordes — with good reason.
This year, two specific articles dominated genre discussions despite their wildly unsubstantiated and data-ignorant claims. The Hollywood Reporter warned that studio executives are worried about "Horror Fatigue," while Vulture opted for the headline "Horror Movies Are Just Trying To Survive." I hate the phrase "Horror Fatigue"; it's a made-up phenomenon that's been disproven year after year. Yet, sites like THR and Vulture approach horror-centric journalism with a goldfish's attention span.

Indie cinema has two new bloodsoaked champions, and their names are Damien Leone and Art the Clown.
This weekend, the Christmas-themed horror threequel “Terrifier 3,” beat out the strong third weekend of Universal/DreamWorks’ “The Wild Robot” and the historically poor second weekend of Warner Bros.’ “Joker: Folie a Deux” to take the No. 1 spot at the box office with an $18.3 million opening weekend from 2,516 theaters.
It’s the fourth-highest opening weekend for a horror film this year, topping movies like Universal/Blumhouse’s “Speak No Evil” and “Night Swim” as well as Lionsgate’s “Never Let Go” and “The Strangers — Chapter 1.”
It’s a weekend that has floored Chris McGurk, CEO of the company that distributed “Terrifier 3,” Cineverse. Formerly known as Cinedigm and owner of dozens of bespoke streaming services and media companies, including the popular horror media group Bloody Disgusting, Cineverse spent just $500,000 out of pocket on marketing “Terrifier 3,...

This weekend’s box office is a tale of two clowns, as Cineverse/Bloody Disgusting’s “Terrifier 3” has become a can’t-miss film for horror fans with a $18.3 million opening weekend from 2,514 theaters while Warner Bros.’ “Joker: Folie a Deux” has suffered one of the worst second weekend drops ever seen for a wide release.
Todd Phillips’ $190 million sequel to “Joker,” the first R-rated film to gross $1 billion worldwide, has fallen 81% from its $37.8 million opening weekend to just $7 million. According to data from Box Office Mojo and exhibitor sources, that will be the worst second weekend percentage drop for any wide release with an opening weekend of $30 million or more if it stands after Monday actuals are reported.

The excitement around Terrifier 3, written and directed by Damien Leone, and starring David Howard Thornton and Lauren Lavera, has horror fans talking. Reports from early screenings claim the opening scene was so disturbing that viewers walked out and some even became ill. However, many believe this could be a marketing strategy to build hype, especially after recent horror films have failed to meet expectations.

A remake of the Danish horror movie, Blumhouse and Universal released Speak No Evil in theaters over the weekend, and the news is good on both the critical and box office fronts.
Arriving in theaters with an 83% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, Speak No Evil debuted with $11.3 million in 3,375 theaters at the domestic box office over the weekend.
Worldwide, the film’s current total is $20,873,595.
The reported production budget for Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil is $15 million, so the film should have no problem turning a profit at the box office in the coming weeks.
For the sake of context, Speak No Evil‘s $11.3 million domestic debut is higher than the opening weekends for several of this year’s horror movies, including Abigail, Imaginary, The First Omen, Blink Twice, The Watchers, Tarot, AfrAId, and Lisa Frankenstein. It opened to nearly the same amount as Blumhouse’s Night Swim ($11.7m), which ended with $54 million.

If you're a horror fan, you're familiar with Blumhouse Productions (cited as Blumhouse from here out). Even if you're not a horror fan, you've probably watched a Blumhouse film without knowing it ("Whiplash?" "Jem and the Holograms?" "Tooth Fairy?"). Jason Blum's nightmare factory is synonymous with today's mainstream horror pillars, securing the rights to everything from "Halloween" to "The Exorcist" and beyond. Indeed, it's impossible to banter about our contemporary horror era without acknowledging how prevalent and prodigious Blumhouse has become — so why does it feel like it's ghosting us this year?
Blumhouse decimated last year's horror movie market. In 2023, Blum's juggernaut scared up nearly $800 million worldwide in box office totals. Emma Tammi's video game adaptation "Five Nights at Freddy's" boasted a high score of $297 million on a $20 million budget — one of nine films released by Blumhouse. Now, there's no metric for reporting for streaming titles like...

The weekend box office numbers have begun rolling in, and it looks like Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice held up much better than anyone (except us) expected in week two. According to Deadline, the popular sequel grossed $51.6 million this weekend, which is the second-best sophomore weekend for a fall movie since It back in 2017. Notably, the film only dipped 54% this weekend, a strong hold for a movie that opened north of $100 million.
With a $188 million domestic total, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice seems certain to end its domestic run with a $250 million-plus final gross. It is another winner for Warner Bros, who are having a good year. Wonka, Dune: Part Two, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire were all major worldwide hits, with only their underrated Furiosa and Horizon: Chapter 1 box office misfires for them this year. Three new movies were no match for the Ghost With the Most as “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” loomed large over domestic box office charts again.
Tim Burton’s spooky sequel added a stellar $51.6 million in its second weekend of release, bringing its tally to $188 million in North America and $264 million globally. “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” hasn’t resonated as strongly at the international box office, where the Warner Bros. film has earned $76.3 million to date.
In terms of newcomers, “Speak No Evil,” Universal and Blumhouse’s remake of the 2022 Danish horror film, opened in second place with $11.5 million from 3,375 venues. Provocateur comedian Matt Walsh’s satire documentary “Am I Racist?” landed in fourth place with a decent $4.75 million from 1,517 theaters. The film, released by conservative pundit Ben Shapiro’s The Daily Wire, landed the top debut in 2024 for a doc. Meanwhile, Lionsgate’s “The Killer’s Game” with Dave Bautista failed to connect, debuting at No.

There used to be a very big difference when talking about independent horror and mainstream horror. The latter would often be much more tame, with a goal of maximizing the audience, therefore maximizing Box Office. Indie horror would often be darker, going for moments that would stick with you long after the credits roll. But as society has shifted into this different entertainment landscape, there’s more of a desire than ever for something wholly unique. Mostly in the sake of profit. Thinking outside of the box is rewarded as it’s all about grabbing attention. It’s why a film like Longlegs can come out and absolutely light the world on fire. Because filmmakers are being forced to take risks in an attempt to get people to the theaters. Audiences are tired of the same old, same old.
This has never been more evident than with the failures of Blumhouse’s 2024 lineup.

From the creators of found footage movie The Houses October Built comes Will Helm, an upcoming proof-of-concept horror short starring Spencer Charnas from Ice Nine Kills.
Directed by Bobby Roe and written by Zack Andrews & Bobby Roe, Will Helm is hitting the festival circuit this Halloween season, and Bloody Disgusting has an exclusive preview.
The plot of Will Helm is under wraps, but it will be premiering at Sitges and Screamfest next month. It will also show at the Knoxville Horror Film Fest before an anniversary screening of Wes Craven’s New Nightmare at the drive-in part of the festival.
From what we gather, there is an unofficial A Nightmare on Elm Street component in Will Helm and it acts as something of a meta combo piece for the Wes Craven classic.
Bobby Roe tells Bloody Disgusting, “We are hoping to follow in the footsteps of Smile, Night Swim and Lights Out.

2024 got off to a very rough start at the box office, particularly in regards to mainstream horror releases. In 2022 and 2023, horror proved to be one of the most bankable genres that theaters could depend on in the aftermath of the pandemic. Unfortunately, the likes of "Night Swim," "Imaginary," "Abigail," and others disappointed earlier this year. Things have rebounded and we now have hits such as "A Quiet Place: Day One" and the unexpected $100 million hit that was "Longlegs." One movie stands tall above the rest though, and that movie is "Alien: Romulus." Even more crazy to consider? That movie nearly went straight to Hulu.
On its fourth weekend in theaters, director Fede Alvarez's "Romulus" added another $3.9 million to its ever-growing total domestically. "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" took the lion's share of the attention with a massive $111 million opening, but the latest "Alien" movie is still holding its own. To that end,...

The name Blumhouse has become almost synonymous with horror in the modern era, thanks to the success of franchises such as "The Purge," "Paranormal Activity," and the recent "Halloween" reboot trilogy. That sort of brand recognition is tough to acquire in Hollywood. That said, the studio has had something of an off year, and could use an unqualified hit to get things back on track. It looks like the upcoming "Speak No Evil" remake could be that much-needed hit when it opens next weekend.
Director James Watkins' take on "Speak No Evil" is currently eyeing a debut in the $15 to $20 million range, per Box Office Theory. While the budget has yet to be revealed, Blumhouse rarely goes over $20 million since its business model has always been predicated on spending low to potentially hit it big. Chris Weitz’s new horror movie “AfrAId” does something I didn’t know could be done yet: It makes me nostalgic for the early 2010s. That was 15 years ago? Holy moly, am I getting old. Wait, holy moly, I just unironically wrote “holy moly.” Twice — no! Three times! Oh, I don’t like that. I don’t like that at all.
But there’s something to like about “AfrAId.” Weitz’s latest is a throwback to the early days of Blumhouse, when the horror studio made waves by producing extremely cheap horror movies and making a tidy profit even if they weren’t all big hits. The early Blumhouse formula was about seemingly normal families squaring off against evil in their seemingly normal houses, a premise that makes for a simple but effective allegory for suburban strife. Sometimes it was a ghost, sometimes it was a demon, one time it was aliens.

Horror Afraid leads the new titles at the UK and Ireland box office this weekend, launching in 450 locations for Sony.
Directed by Chris Weitz, Afraid stars John Cho and Katherine Waterston as devoted parents who get selected to try a new smart home AI device. The device quickly becomes overprotective of the family and begins interfering in their lives.
It is the latest feature from horror juggernaut Blumhouse, this year’s titles of which include Imaginary (£2m) and Night Swim (£1.4m). The film will have stiff competition from Disney’s fellow horror Alien: Romulus which was up to £8.8m at the end of last weekend.

When Kevin Hart started out, he made himself the butt of most of the jokes in his self-deprecating standup routines. Now, he fancies himself as a Hip Hop mogul type, launching businesses left and right and producing a steady stream of TV shows and films. Unfortunately, this flurry of output in recent years hasn't all been that great. Earlier this year, Hart starred in "Lift," which topped the Netflix charts despite being yet another generic streaming flick quickly buried by the tide of "content" spewing forth in the streaming age. Prior to that, Hart tried to bring an air of prestige to his streaming exploits by convincing Wesley Snipes to play his brother in Netflix limited series "True Story." Sadly for the comedian, Snipes proved to be the best thing about the show.

James Wan is developing a new “Creature From the Black Lagoon” movie at Universal and is in early talks to direct the project, TheWrap has learned.
The remake is currently seeking a writer to work with Wan. The filmmaker is developing a grounded, modernized retelling of the original classic that will lean into visceral horror.
The project could be Wan’s first movie as director since his company Atomic Monster merged with Blumhouse last year.
Atomic Monster will produce the film, with Michael Clear and Judson Scott as executive producers and Wan producing. Executive vice president of Production Development Jay Polidoro will oversee for Universal.
The original 1954 “Creature From the Black Lagoon” centered on a team of scientists that traveled to the Amazon to investigate a fossil. They discover a hidden lagoon where a prehistoric fish-man creature still lives. Complications ensue when the creature becomes interested in the female scientist.

The Creature From the Black Lagoon is rising once again.
James Wan, the creator of the Saw and The Conjuring horror franchises, is developing a new take on the classic Universal monster property and is in early talks to direct the feature project.
The move comes as Wan and his collaborators presented Universal with a pitch to remake the 1954 monster classic. A writer will now be hired to write a script, working in concert with Wan.
This is the first project Wan has attached himself to as a director following his company’s production banner, Atomic Monster, merging with Blumhouse. Wan was under water for the last few years on DC superhero movie Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and has been looking to get back to his horror roots in some way.
Wan will act as a producer on Creature, while Atomic Monster’s Michael Clear and Judson Scott serve as executive producers.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” remains a box office force with $824 million globally after two weekends of release.
The comic book sequel, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as their antihero alter egos, has already surpassed the entire theatrical runs of 2016’s “Deadpool” ($783 million) and 2018’s “Deadpool 2” ($786 million). “Deadpool & Wolverine” is now the second-highest grossing movie of 2024 behind “Inside Out 2” ($1.555 billion) and the third-biggest R-rated movie in history after “Joker” ($1.07 billion) and “Oppenheimer” ($975 million). It’s expected to cross the $1 billion mark in a matter of days.
After this weekend, Disney became the first studio of 2024 to surpass $3 billion in worldwide ticket sales. Until "Longlegs" became the biggest box office surprise of the year, things weren't looking all that great for horror in 2024. A usually reliable genre was seemingly losing some of its appeal, as no one single film was able to repeat the breakout success of 2023's "Talk To Me" or "Skinamarink." Sydney Sweeney's dour nun horror pic "Immaculate" failed to wow critics and the generic yet enjoyable "Night Swim" couldn't quite become the breakout hit Universal were surely hoping for. Neither of these films were out and out financial failures, but it's actually quite difficult to lose a ton of money when your budgets are around the to $9-15 million mark.
Of course, the aforementioned "LongLegs" has proven that horror can still very much succeed at the box office, especially if you deploy one of the best marketing campaigns of recent years to support it. Which, as it happens, is...

M. Night Shyamalan’s “Trap” lands in theaters on Friday, but the twisted thriller won’t stand a chance on box office charts against the reigning champion, Marvel’s “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
“Trap” is targeting $15 million to $20 million in its opening weekend and will compete for second place with Universal’s disaster epic “Twisters.” The Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones-led film is estimated to add $17 million to 19 million in its third frame. So far, “Twisters” has grossed $154 million domestically and $220 million globally. This weekend’s other new release, Sony’s kid-friendly “Harold and the Purple Crayon,” is aiming for a bleak $6 million to $7 million to start.
Despite two newcomers, “Deadpool & Wolverine” will continue to rule the box office in its second weekend of release. Ticket sales could decline anywhere from 55% to 65% from its stellar $211 million debut, which would result in roughly $75 million to $95 million in its sophomore outing.

The Apple TV+ series "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters," like the film series that inspired it, skips around dramatically throughout history. Recall that "Kong: Skull Island," which came out after 2014's "Godzilla," was set mostly in 1973 after opening with a flashback to 1944. "Legacy of Monsters" likewise jumps back and forth a lot, exploring a present-day timeframe c. 2015 and a much earlier timeline set in the mid-1950s. To show the legacy of humans that work at Monarch -- the secret government agency assigned to oversee and wrangle kaiju -- both time frames feature the character Lee Shaw. In the 1950s, Shaw was one of the founding members of Monarch. In the '10s, he becomes re-immersed in Monarch after encountering the show's lead character, Cate (Anna Sawai).
In the 1950s, Shaw is played by Wyatt Russell, the star of "Overlord," "Everybody Wants Some!!," and "Night Swim." In the '10s segments,...

It’s easy to say which streamer will get “Twisters” when it’s finished rampaging through theaters, but when it will arrive is a tricky question.
Nothing like an environmental disaster movie to take the edge off a stressful month, right? “Twisters” makes its theatrical debut on Friday, July 19, nearly 30 years after its predecessor “Twister” arrived to delight and terrify audiences. The movie is only available in theaters, but I’ll give my prediction on when you can stream it at home below!
Key Details: Critics praise the film as a high-velocity thriller and single out actor Glen Powell for accolades. As a Universal film, “Twisters” will stream on Peacock when it leaves theaters. NBCUniversal may have settled into a dual releasing schedule for its movies, but will “Twisters” use a shorter or longer window? Sign Up $7.99+ / month peacocktv.com Watch a Trailer for ‘Twisters’:

Several weeks before Neon achieved a company-record $22.4m opening weekend with Osgood Perkins’s Longlegs, James A. Janisse and his wife Chelsea Rebecca sat down to watch the serial killer horror thriller in a theatre.
They were among the first to see the film starring Maika Monroe as an FBI agent and Nicolas Cage as the eponymous serial killer. And, to heighten the experience, they watched it alone – in stark contrast to the sold-out screenings that would eventually take place in some 2,500 theatres across North America last weekend.

Around this time last week, movie theater chain Flix Brewhouse wasn’t planning on scheduling the Neon horror film “Longlegs” at its Dallas venue in Fresco.
By Thursday around noon, though, chief revenue officer Chris Randleman noticed a notable uptick in interest at the circuit’s other locations. “We saw, ‘Oh shit, this is really popping off sales-wise,” he recalls. “We have to book this.” They rang Neon, the film’s distributor, and secured a few last-minute showtimes. “By the end of the night, we had 100 tickets sold. It usually doesn’t happen like that.”
Randleman’s hunch proved to be prophetic. “Longlegs,” an occult-tilted thriller, collected a stellar $22.6 million in its opening weekend. The year might have gotten off to a slow start at the box office, but things are finally starting to heat up in the back half of 2024. Not only did "Inside Out 2" just cross the $1 billion mark after a stellar $57.4 million third weekend in theaters, but Paramount's "A Quiet Place: Day One" finally delivered the horror hit that we've been waiting for. Indeed, the third installment in the ever-expanding sci-fi franchise delivered a franchise-best domestic opening, taking in an estimated $53 million. But that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Director Michael Sarnoski's "Quiet Place" prequel also took in a stellar $45.5 million overseas, bringing its global total to $98.5 million. With that, it becomes the highest-grossing horror movie of 2024 worldwide after just a single weekend in theaters. The previous record belonged to the South Korean blockbuster "Exhuma," which did $97.6 million worth of business around the world, becoming a modest hit in the U.

Silence has returned to the box office, but if you listen carefully you might hear the sound of theater owners happily counting their cash. Horror prequel "A Quiet Place: Day One" landed this weekend, and although it's the first "Quiet Place" movie without John Krasinski in the director's chair, the series hasn't skipped a beat. In fact, "Day One" set a new record for the franchise with a mighty $53 million opening weekend at the domestic box office. It also grossed $45.5 million from overseas markets, which adds up to a global opening weekend just shy of $100 million. It's already the highest-grossing horror movie of 2024 after just a few days in theaters.

Horror movies are historically one of the most dependable genres at the box office, but they've been struggling in 2024. The highest-grossing of the year so far is "Night Swim," a movie about a haunted swimming pool that scraped $54.6 million worldwide -- quite a departure from 2023 megahits like "M3GAN" and "Five Nights at Freddy's." But now, "A Quiet Place: Day One" looks set to overtake "Night Swim" in its opening weekend alone, as audiences flock back to theaters for another installment of the high-tension, low-volume horror series.

M3GAN is getting a cousin, or something.
Blumhouse and Atomic Monster officially merged earlier this year, and we're starting to get more information on their planned collaborative horror projects.
First, they announced a new Lee Cronin's (Evil Dead Rise) horror movie, and now Variety reports that they will release a techno-thriller titled Soulm8te to be set in the M3GAN universe. M3GAN will also get a direct sequel, M3GAN 2.0, which will be released on June 27, 2025.
Said to be in the style of the classic 1990s erotic/domestic thrillers, Soulm8te is about a grieving widower who acquires an android to take the place of his late wife. “In an attempt to create a truly sentient partner, he inadvertently turns a harmless lovebot into a deadly soulmate.” Sounds kind of like Fatal Attraction meets Her.

Paramount Pictures and director John Krasinski struck gold in 2018 with the blockbuster horror flick "A Quiet Place." Working from an original concept by screenwriters Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the film became an unexpected smash hit, paving the way for a new franchise that is still going strong. So strong that the studio has decided to offer up a prequel in the form of "A Quiet Place: Day One." With an appealing cast and an interesting hook, it appears as though this is going to break the genre's rough streak at the box office in 2024 to become the year's first major horror hit.
Paramount's "A Quiet Place" prequel is currently eyeing an opening in the $42 to $51 million range when it hits theaters next weekend, per Box Office Theory. That is pretty much in line with early tracking, which had the film taking in $40 million or more, according to Deadline.

2024 has been a pretty solid year for Blumhouse movies, but 2025 is shaping up to be even bigger thanks to a slate featuring sequels to several hit franchises sure to break big at the box office!
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Blumhouse founder and CEO Jason Blum gave fans a tease of what projects are currently being worked on over at the studio as part of the studio’s 2025 slate – a slate full of highly anticipated projects that are sure to get fans excited!
“Hey all. We are working on another M3GAN and Black Phone and Fnaf and Insidious all for next year,” Blum teased before telling fans to, “Buckle up. ‘25 is gonna be epic.”
Now, none of these projects are exactly a surprise as they had all previously been announced, but either way, it goes without saying that 2025 is definitely going to be an insane year for Blumhouse movie fans with M3GAN,...

Even as the 21st century has seen virtually every longstanding pillar of the Hollywood business model challenged (and in some cases destroyed), the endless profitability of horror movies has remained a comforting truth in an era of uncertainty.
In many ways, the genre’s business fundamentals have rendered it immune to the winds of change that have sent the rest of the industry into a state of turmoil. Horror films can be produced incredibly cheaply, seldom rely on expensive stars, enjoy a loyal built-in fanbase, and thrive on a level of immersion that incentivizes fans to take trips to theaters rather than streaming at home. Those factors have long combined to form something of an economic moat around horror movies, allowing the genre to remain a profitable corner of studio balance sheets in even the most trying years.

Director Lee Cronin is working on a secret project for New Line Cinema, as Warner Bros announces a host of upcoming release dates.
Warner Bros has staked a claim on several key release dates over the next few years, although for the most part, we can only speculate what the studio might be planning to release.
Let’s start with what we do know though: the dates have been set for ‘event’ films (although that can be a pretty elastic term) and begin with the first movie greenlit at James Wan and Jason Blum’s recently merged Atomic Monster and Blumhouse.
While the two companies collaborated on the rather fun M3GAN and then, the also fun Night Swim, this project marks their first official release since the merger. And while nobody is going to give us any prizes for guessing that it will be a horror film, we now...

Another weekend in the books, another disappointing opening for a much-anticipated horror movie. Warner Bros. released Ishana Night Shyamalan's "The Watchers" in theaters this past weekend, and given that the daughter of "The Sixth Sense" director M. Night Shyamalan was getting into the family business, there was excitement around this one. Unfortunately, the end result left much to be desired in the early going, both critically and commercially.
"The Watchers" opened to an estimated $7 million in its debut domestically. It opened against "Bad Boys: Ride or Die," which easily won the weekend with an impressive $56.5 million opening. Unfortunately, even though this seemed like an example of solid counterprogramming, Shyamalan's mysterious horror flick landed at number four on the charts, also placing behind "The Garfield Movie" ($10 million) and "If" ($8 million). Those movies were in their third and fourth weekends, respectively. Needless to say, this isn't what WB had in mind.

It hasn't been a good summer at the box office thus far (which might be the understatement of the year), and 2024 has left the industry at large with a lot of questions it needs to answer sooner rather than later. Be that as it may, we can always rely on horror, it seems, to pepper in some optimism. To that end, IFC's unrated slasher "In a Violent Nature" posted the company's second-best opening weekend over recently, adding to the studio's surprisingly good year.
With no new big releases hitting theaters in the post-Memorial Day frame, "The Garfield Movie" topped the charts with an anemic $14 million in an overall terrible weekend. But that left plenty of room for everything else, including "In a Violent Nature." Director Chris Nash's acclaimed, low-budget feature directorial debut made $2.1 million on just over 1,400 screens, placing number eight on the charts just behind Crunchyroll's...
