When the idea for her upcoming novel “Expiration Dates” began percolating in her head, author Rebecca Serle worried at first that the concept was “gimmicky.”

“There was something missing,” she tells Variety over the phone, two weeks before the book’s March 19 launch. The premise — based on the question, “What if a woman got slips of paper that told her how long she’d spend in a relationship?” — felt like it verged on triteness. But the story evolved beyond that initial fear when Serle figured out the book’s midpoint, a major revelation that raises the stakes for its protagonist, Daphne, and introduces a sobering depth to an otherwise lighthearted concept.

“All of my books through ‘Expiration Dates’ have some kind of midway twist,” she says. “I discovered what that was, and then I started writing.”

The Cleaning Lady will be back for another go-round. Fox has renewed the popular series for a third season, the network’s first live-action scripted renewal for the 2023-24 season. Additionally, Jeannine Renshaw (Good Girls) also has joined the show as an executive producer and will serve as showrunner with Miranda Kwok.

Exclusive: Actress, model and singer Bella Thorne (Midnight Sun) has been set to star in thriller Saint Clare, co-scripted by Guinevere Turner (American Psycho).

The project will follow Clare Bleecker (Thorne), a quiet catholic college student with a divine vocation for killing. The story is based on novel Clare At 16 by Don Roff, with its novel sequel out in 2023.

Producers are in negotiations with Rebecca DeMornay (Jessica Jones) to join the cast, with additional casting of other key roles underway. Production is scheduled to begin soon in Kentucky.

The film will be directed by Mitzi Peirone (Braid) who has also scripted with Turner (who co-wrote the screenplay for cult Bret Easton Ellis adaptation American Psycho). Producers are David Chackler, Arielle Elwes, Thor Bradwell, and Joel Michaely.

The film follows 17-year-old Sigga who tells her parents she is leaving her beautiful Icelandic fishing village to become a poet in California as her grandfather has just given her enough money to buy a plane ticket. Exclusive: Actress-singer Pepi Sonuga (Famous in Love) has been tapped as a series regular opposite Eve and Naturi Naughton in Queens, ABC’s hourlong pilot from Zahir McGhee, Sabrina Wind and ABC Signature.

Sonuga is joining Queens after having been cast in McGhee and ABC Signature’s 2020 drama pilot Harlem’s Kitchen.

In Queens, written by McGhee and directed by Tim Story, four estranged and out-of-touch women in their 40s — two of them played by Eve and Naughton — reunite for a chance to recapture their fame and regain the swagger they had as the Nasty Bitches – their ’90s group that made them legends in the hip-hop world.

Exclusive: Chris Coy, Julia McDermott and Carter Jenkins are set to co-star opposite Adrienne Warren in ABC’s limited series Women of the Movement, from creator-writer Marissa Jo Cerar and a producing team that includes Jay-Z, Will Smith and Aaron Kaplan.

The six-episode limited series, set to premiere in 2021, centers on Mamie Till-Mobley (Warren), who devoted her life to seeking justice for her son Emmett Till (Cedric Joe) following his brutal killing in the Jim Crow South.

McDermott, Jenkins and Coy will play Carolyn Bryant, her husband Roy Bryant, and his half-brother J. W. Milam, respectively, the Mississippi trio at the center of Emmett Till’s murder.

None of the Above, from ABC Signature and Tornante TV, is a single-cam comedy that follows Cannon (Wayans) and his best friend Valencia (Cooper), two college friends that find their transition into the “real” world isn’t easy because they don’t quite conform to other people’s expectations.

Wayans’ Cannon is a self-assured, witty guy who is always open to new experiences… except when he’s suddenly not.

Cooper’s Valencia is a strong-willed woman of devout faith, whose drive to succeed can often border on obsessive and gets her into trouble.

Producers Lily Blavin and Niki Koss have launched a new production company, Lightning Strikes Productions, and are developing Dave Pelzer’s best-selling memoir “A Child Called ‘It’: One Child’s Courage to Survive.”

“A Child Called ‘It'” was published in 1995 and detailed the abuse Pelzer suffered as a child from his alcoholic mother. The book was on The New York Times’ bestseller list for several years. The project will focus on a child’s unyielding courage for survival enabling him to overcome extreme life-threatening odds.

Blavin is producing along with Paul Blavin, David Goldblum and Karen Kehela Sherwood. Goldblum and Tamlin Hall are writing the script.

Production is on the third and fourth installments of the After film franchise is currently underway with a couple of new casting additions. True Blood alum Stephen Moyer has joined the YA pic along with Oscar winner Mira Sorvino (Mighty Aphrodite), Chance Perdomo (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Arielle Kebbel (John Tucker Must Die), and Carter Jenkins (Famous in Love).

Castille Landon is directing both films, which formally went by After We Fell and After Ever Happy, respectively. Josephine Langford and Hero Fiennes Tiffin are reprising their leading role along with returnees Louise Lombard and Rob Estes. Also new to the sequels are Frances Turner and Kiana Maderia.

Sharon Soboil wrote screenplays for both the third and fourth films.

Fox has sealed a deal with actress and writer Bella Thorne (“The Duff”) to develop scripted and unscripted projects for the network.

Deal comes following Thorne’s appearance on Season 3 of “The Masked Singer,” in which she performed in costume as the Swan.

“If I was able to tell my 8-year-old self that you’re going to sign a development deal with Fox by the time you’re 22, I would just be like, you’re lying, no way,” Thorne told Variety. “I’m honestly so proud and happy and so thankful to the network that they believe in me and they believe in the mindset I have of this generation.”

Thorne said she hoped to bring a new voice to the network, and is looking to develop scripted fare in the vein of young adult series like “Riverdale” or “Gossip Girl.”

Swan might’ve gotten kicked off The Masked Singer this week, but don’t worry: She’s not done feathering the nest at Fox.

The elegant avian, who was revealed to be former Famous in Love star Bella Thorne, now has a deal to develop scripted and unscripted content at the network. Ahead of her ouster Wednesday (read a recap here), TVLine briefly chatted with Thorne — whose small-screen credits also include Scream and Shake It Up — about her post-Swan plans.

ABC’s drama pilot “Harlem’s Kitchen” has cast Clare-Hope Ashitey, Adrianna Mitchell, and Pepi Sonuga, Variety has learned.

The series is described as an ensemble family drama set in a fine dining restaurant in Harlem. They join previously announced cast member Delroy Lindo, who will play Ellis Rice, the head chef at the restaurant at the heart of the series.

Ashitey will play Zadie, the eldest Rice daughter. Ivy League educated, Zadie could work anywhere she wants but her perpetual sense of responsibility brought her back to Rice as the front-of-house manager. She never wants to disappoint her parents. But all of the pressure has led Zadie into a third-life crisis that could jeopardize everything she has achieved. It may also work to set her free.

A Pretty Little Liar is set to cause a stir on ABC's Stumptown.

TV Line is reporting that Troian Bellisario will appear on the February 12 installment of the P.I. drama.

This will be her first TV role since Pretty Little Liars concluded after seven seasons of head-spinning twists back in 2017.

Fox has given its first drama greenlight this cycle, handing a pilot order to The Cleaning Lady, based on the Argentinian series, from The 100 writer Miranda Kwok, Stargirl Ep Melissa Carter, Shay Mitchell’s Amore & Vita Productions and Warner Bros. Television. The pilot is a co-pro between Warner Bros. TV and Fox Entertainment.

Written by Kwok, The Cleaning Lady is a one-hour darkly aspirational character drama about a whip-smart doctor who comes to the U.S. for a medical treatment to save her ailing son. But when the system fails and pushes her into hiding, she refuses to be beaten down and marginalized. Instead, she becomes a cleaning lady for the mob and starts playing the game by her own rules.

Kwok executive produces with Mitchell and Carter.

The Cleaning Lady is based on Argentinian format La Chica Que Limpia, which aired in 2017 on digital platform Cine.ar Play.

Niki Koss, best known for co-starring on the Freeform series Famous in Love, will make her feature directorial debut with Night, Night, a psychological thriller about a woman who wakes up from a horrific car accident and must find a way to survive a recovery from hell. Descendants actress Brenna D’Amico is attached to star in the film which was written by Robert Johnson. Additional cast includes Tony Todd, Eric Roberts, Brooke Anne Smith, Adam Budron, Nick Marini, Matty Cardarople, and Neels Visser. Filming will commence this month in Corsicana, Texas. Koss, Johnson, Austin Seltzer, and Ryan DeLaney are producing while Amber McNutt will serve as executive producer. Koss is repped by Abrams Artists and Mckeon Myones.
