When the idea for her upcoming novel “Expiration Dates” began percolating in her head, author Rebecca Serle worried at first that the concept was “gimmicky.”
“There was something missing,” she tells Variety over the phone, two weeks before the book’s March 19 launch. The premise — based on the question, “What if a woman got slips of paper that told her how long she’d spend in a relationship?” — felt like it verged on triteness. But the story evolved beyond that initial fear when Serle figured out the book’s midpoint, a major revelation that raises the stakes for its protagonist, Daphne, and introduces a sobering depth to an otherwise lighthearted concept.
“All of my books through ‘Expiration Dates’ have some kind of midway twist,” she says. “I discovered what that was, and then I started writing.”

This month, ABC is betting big that viewers will tune into its ambitious three-part, six-episode limited series “Women of the Movement,” centering on 14-year-old Emmett Till’s brutal murder in 1955 that served as an important catalyst for the civil rights movement. With the ongoing investigation into the Capitol riot and reignited Critical Race Theory debates in the wake of Nikole Hannah-Jones’ “The 1619 Project,” the nation’s “wokeness” meter has arguably never been higher. But the question is whether a traditional broadcast network can succeed on a project first developed at HBO.
Consciously focusing on the role Black women played in the civil rights struggle, “Women of the Movement” centers on Till’s grieving mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, and her determination to bring her son’s mutilated body back to Chicago to “let the world see” (a phrase that inspires the title of ABC’s companion docuseries). We also follow the trial...

“The Ncaa has nothing on us,” host Nick Cannon said at the start of this week’s The Masked Singer, and yeah, that is factually accurate.
Fox’s reality singing series was shot a while back, so Cannon had no way of knowing that Episode 8 would drop in the middle of a pandemic that is forcing all of us to stay home, eat our feelings and scrub our hands like we’ve never scrubbed before. (Or maybe that’s just me?) The March Madness college basketball tournament to which he refers is cancelled. TV shows are stopped in their tracks.
