“Anora,” the free-wheeling tale of a sex worker who becomes entangled with the family of a Russian oligarch, and “I Saw the TV Glow,” a horror film about two teenagers whose obsession with a show causes them to lose grip on reality, dominated the 2025 Independent Spirit Awards nominations on Wednesday, picking up six nods apiece. Both movies are up for best feature, competing against the body horror film, “The Substance,” as well as “Nickel Boys” and “Sing Sing,” dramas that deal with different aspects of the criminal justice system.

Over two seasons on the Marvel Studios series “Loki,” Tom Hiddleston’s god of mischief learns to forsake his past as Marvel villain and become the hero we all knew he could be. But his past transgressions are never far from his memory.
In a deleted scene from Season 2 of the show — part of an impending 4K Uhd Blu-ray release — Loki recalls just how many people “said I was a problem” while talking with his friend Mobius (Owen Wilson) over slices of key lime pie.
Loki names Thor’s compatriots on Asgard — Volstagg (Ray Stevenson), Hogan (Tadanobu Asano) and Fandral (Josh Dallas and Zachary Levi) — as well as Laufey (Colm Feore), king of the Frost Giants and Loki’s biological father, and Bor (Tony Curran), father of Odin and Loki’s adoptive grandfather. And he names Heimdall twice because, Loki says, “Heimdall was a big one!”

Venerable Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada‘s victory tour for Shogun has continued all the way to Toruń, Poland. The Emmy-winning star of Disney and FX’s smash-hit samurai series received the Camerimage Film Festival’s inaugural award for best television series performance earlier this week.
The Polish specialty festival, an industry favorite, has long been known for its focus on the art of cinematography, but in recent years, it has expanded its remit to honor other aspects of moving-image creation. Other industry heavyweights in attendance at the fest this year have included multi-Oscar winner Alfonso Cuarón, legendary director of photography Ed Lachman (the event’s lifetime achievement honoree) and actress Cate Blanchett, who is serving as the head of the competition jury.
The Hollywood Reporter caught up with Sanada at Camerimage for a brief chat at Toruń’s upscale Hotel Bulwar on the banks of the Vistula River.

Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid is back at the helm for the sequel Mortal Kombat 2, and while the video game adaptation wrapped production back in January after a bumpy ride through the year of the strikes, they had to go back for some reshoots this past summer. So we still don’t know when this movie is going to be released – but it shouldn’t be much longer before we’re hearing release date news, because the Motion Picture Association ratings board has seen the movie and given it a rating! Mortal Kombat 2 has been rated R for strong bloody violence and gore, and language. The previous movie was rated R for strong bloody violence and language throughout, and some crude references.

A portrait of the brilliantly gifted and deeply troubled Japanese photographer Masahisa Fukase, “Ravens” is an arresting and engrossing slice of artistic life on the edge from “England Is Mine” director Mark Gill. A mix of dark fantasy and potent drama set largely in the ’60s and ’70s, Gill has fashioned his view of the turning points in Fukase’s life and career as a love triangle between the photographer; his wife and collaborator Yoko Wanibe; and Fukase’s inner demons and artistic desires, which come to startling life in the form of a giant talking raven. Starring Emmy-nominated “Shogun” actor Tadanobu Asano as the artist whose work continues to be discovered and celebrated long after his death in 2012, “Ravens” should appeal to adventurous viewers whether or not they’re familiar with Fukase.
Taking its title from a 10-year black-and-white project published to wide acclaim in 1986, “Ravens” opens with Fukase’s 1982 statement,...

The 37th Tokyo International Film Festival got off to a memorably splashy start Monday night with the world premiere of filmmaker Shiraishi Kazuya’s frenetic and wildly bloody samurai action flick 11 Rebels.
In recent years, Japan’s preeminent cinema event has been attempting to revitalize and rebrand itself as a not-to-be-missed cultural occasion in the Asia-Pacific region. After years of organizational drift, the festival, under the leadership of current chairman Hiroyasu Ando, is on a mission to boost its reach and reputation into something more commensurate with the country’s powerful cinematic past and the ever-growing appeal of Japanese culture around the globe.
In that sense, 11 Rebels was perhaps the perfect pick for this year’s opening gala screening. A throw-back samurai slasher, the film is based on a decades-old screenplay by the late, great scriptwriter Kasahara Kazuo, best known for his cult classic yakuza film Battles Without Honor and Humanity...

Is “Shōgun” about to pull a “Succession” at the 2025 Golden Globes?
Currently at Gold Derby, the FX historical epic leads three top categories in our Golden Globe predictions: Best Drama Series, Best Drama Actor for Hiroyuki Sanada, and Best Drama Actress for Anna Sawai. If it also manages to pull off a fourth victory in a supporting race, it would match “Succession’s” total of four from last year.
For its final season, HBO’s family drama won the series prize at the Golden Globes and it also took home trophies for lead actors Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook, plus supporting player Matthew Macfadyen.
If “Shōgun” rides off with only the three top categories for series, lead actor, and lead actress, it would still be in good company indeed, as only a handful of dramas have done so. Besides “Succession” in 2023, “The Crown” most recently accomplished this feat in 2020. Before that,...

Award ceremonies these days are a huge deal on social media, full of everything from hilarious moments to the downright bizarre and controversial. The winners’ speeches usually get a lot of attention, but things can go south quickly if something goes really wrong.

At the last Emmys, John Oliver tried to pay tribute to his late dog during his speech, and it was really touching. But, he got cut off before he could finish because the production team jumped the gun. They quickly came up with some excuses for what happened.

FX’s and Hulu’s Shōgun, which is based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name, became a huge series. The series ended relatively recently, and while early rumors suggested that a second season would not be made due to the first season adapting the whole book, we received confirmation that a second and third season are in the works currently, promising a bright future for the series.
We have recently reported how the series won a record-breaking 14 Creative Arts Emmys (out of 17 nominations), and how – with 25 nominations in total – it was the favorite to win big at the main ceremony as well. Baby Reindeer conquered the miniseries category, The Bear won big in the comedy section and…

From sitcoms and rom-coms to crime-thrillers and superhero flicks, Jean Smart has never once shied away from delivering perfectly. With her brilliant acting chops, she brings something new to the table every time, never ceasing to amuse fans and live up to their expectations. The same happened while she was working on her 2019 drama Watchmen as well.

Widely regarded as one of her best works to date, not only did it become a worthy addition to her already star-studded resume but also added to her many gleaming Emmy nods and wins. But surprisingly enough, her role in the series wasn’t originally meant to be hers. If anything, Smart will forever be indebted to Sigourney Weaver for gifting her one of the best roles of her career!

It’s the time of the year again when fans celebrate the winners of the Emmy Awards, but also lament the loss of their favorite series and actors. Just like anything in life, loss is another lesson that teaches us how to strive for the better the next time around.

I have no clue if the expression “run it back” originated in sports, but I most frequently hear it in the context of the end of a successful season, when a player or coach or owner expresses the desire to keep all of the key pieces in place in order to repeat the prior achievement. Sometimes it works and a dynasty is born. Sometimes, though, an effort to run it back falls flat, proving how ephemeral the initial triumph was in the first place.
Back in January, the strike-delayed 75th Primetime Emmy Awards proved to be one of the best awards telecasts in recent memory. Hosted by Anthony Anderson, the show was packed with memorable moments that reflected a love for and pride in the medium of television.

FX’s Shogun extended its reign over the 2024 Emmys on Sunday night. Going into the evening, the hit samurai series already held the record for the most wins by any show in a single year, having bagged 14 trophies at the Creative Arts Emmys a week ago. But the show further cemented its rule inside the Peacock Theater at the Primetime Emmys, winning an additional four awards, including the top categories of best drama series, best actress in a drama series for Anna Sawai, best actor in a drama series for Hiroyuki Sanada and best drama directing for Frederick E.O. Toye.
Shogun’s triumph is momentous on several fronts. The historic awards haul represents a huge win for FX and parent company Disney for a pricey series that took nearly 10 years to bring to fruition and once looked like a very uncertain bet. It’s also a major moment for Asian representation and non-English-language television.

Cast and executive producers of ‘Shogun’ on stage at the 2024 Emmys (Disney/Frank Micelotta)
Father and son Eugene and Dan Levy did a respectable job of hosting the 2024 Primetime Emmys, popping in just enough throughout the two-hour running time to guide the show without overstaying their welcome. Their opening bit avoided any controversial topics, and Dan Levy got a big laugh when he described the Emmys as broadcast TV’s biggest night for honoring movie stars on streaming services. Eugene also earned solid applause when he joked, “In the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making any jokes,” while addressing the show’s controversial classification as a comedy.
Speaking of The Bear, the series was awarded four Emmys during the broadcast in the Actor (Jeremy Allen White), Supporting Actor (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), Supporting Actress (Liza Colón-Zayas), and Outstanding Directing categories. But Hacks pulled off a surprise win, snagging the Comedy Series Emmy.

“Shōgun” is the new Emmy standard.
The FX drama extended its record for most Emmys won by a series in a single year at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards by picking up four more wins, bringing its total to a staggering 18. “Shōgun” already made history last weekend at the Creative Arts Emmys when it collected 14 awards, easily surpassing the previous record for a drama series set in 2015 and 2019 by “Game of Thrones,” when it won 12. The HBO limited series “John Adams” took home 13 Emmys in 2008 and held first place for the TV show — comedy, drama or limited series — with the biggest haul…until “Shōgun” breezed onto the scene.
During the main ceremony, “Shōgun” picked up several top awards, though not nearly as many or as quickly and steadily as some had predicted. After a slow start, it won Emmys for drama series, lead drama actress for Anna Sawai, lead drama...

The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards just aired on ABC, and things went about as expected. In other words, the excellent historical drama Shōgun won Best Drama Series; the caustic slice-of-life series The Bear won Best Comedy Series, since I guess it's a little more like a comedy than Shōgun; and the autobiographical stalker drama Baby Reindeer won Best Limited or Anthology Series.
Those three were the big winners of the night, with them each taking home four awards. Jeremy Allen White won Best Actor In A Comedy Series as expected, and his costar Ebon Moss-Bachrach won Best Supporting Actor. On the drama side, Hiroyuki Sanada won Best Actor and Anna Sawai won Best Actress; she was the one I was really invested in. She was magnificent as Mariko and if she hadn't won I would have been forced to write a strongly worded letter to whoever votes in these things.

“The Bear” cleaned up at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, just not in the final category as so many experts predicted. And “Shōgun” proved more vulnerable than expected, not winning a single Emmy until two hours and 20 minutes into the show.
Below, the 7 biggest unexpected moments of the night.
Billy Crudup Beats Tadanobu Asano and Takehiro Hira from “Shōgun”
Yes, Crudup won this category in 2020 for “The Morning Show,” but that was in the pre-“Shōgun” times. And considering Crudup was up against two other “Morning Show” cast members, Mark Duplass and Jon Hamm, it seemed likely that that voters would split the vote among the three of them, opening up a potential path to victory for Tadanobu Asano from “Shōgun” — or his cast mate Takehiro Hira. In the end, voters more likely split the “Shōgun” vote, clearing the way for Crudup’s second win.

Anna Sawai made history after winning the Emmy for best drama actress for Shogun during Sunday night’s 2024 Emmys.
With her first Emmy win, Sawai became the first actress of Asian descent to win in the lead actress in a drama series category at the Emmys.
Sawai was nominated alongside Jennifer Aniston (The Morning Show), Carrie Coon (The Gilded Age), Maya Erskine (Mr. and Mrs. Smith), Imelda Staunton (The Crown) and Reese Witherspoon (The Morning Show).
When taking the stage, a visibly emotional Sawai quipped, “I was crying before my name was announced. I’m a mess today.”
She began her speech by thanking the Academy for nominating her alongside people she “grew up watching and love.” She went on to thank the FX team for “believing in our story” as well as co-creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo for giving her “the role of a lifetime” as Lady Mariko.

A night of nostalgia, a Baby Reindeer sweep and an incredible launching pad for the upcoming seasons of The Bear and Shōgun made up the 76th annual Primetime Emmys on Sunday.
While the Family Levy didn’t exactly rock the L.A.’s Peacock Theater as the first father-and-son hosts, breakout moments came courtesy of TV’s old guard and Jodie Foster’s first Emmy win.
Here are some of the great moments, surprises and snubs from tonight’s telecast on ABC.
Great moment when Eugene Levy made a crack about The Bear‘s record wins in the comedy category and how, well, it’s hardly a knee-slapping series. “In the true spirit of The Bear we will not be making any jokes.”

Hiroyuki Sanada has won his first Emmy. On Sunday he took home the award for Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role in FX drama series Shōgun, on which he also serves as a producer.
“It was an East-West dream project with respect,” he said while accepting the award, “and Shōgun taught me that when people work together we can make miracles. We can create a better future together.”
In the epic drama series from FX based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel, veteran Japanese actor Sanada stars as Lord Toranaga, the ultimate strategist, whose intricate web ultimately served to unify 17th century Japan. Tadanobu Asano also stars as Lord Kashigi Yabushige, Anna Sawai as Toda Mariko and Cosmo Jarvis as shipwrecked Portuguese explorer John Blackthorne, known as ‘Anjin’.

It’s television’s biggest night, and it’s posed to be a record-breaking one if contenders like “Shōgun” and “The Bear” continue expected sweeps.
The way of things was signaled at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys September 7 and 8 when “Shōgun” broke records grabbing 14 trophies, sweeping every category except the main title theme and original score. “Shōgun” took casting, cinematography, period costumes, editing, period/fantasy production design, period/fantasy hairstyling, main title design, non-prosthetic period/fantasy/sci-fi makeup, prosthetic makeup, sound editing, sound mixing, special visual effects, and stunt performance, and broke a record previously held by “Game of Thrones.”
Tonight, the FX drama is nominated for Best Drama series, among a slew of acting nominations where it looks to continue its stunning run.
On the comedy side, defending champ “The Bear,” also FX, will take on the third season of Max’s “Hacks,” among other contenders like “Abbott Elementary,” and...

“Shōgun” has gone from critical darling to Emmys juggernaut, but plenty may not have taken the dive into this period Japanese world just yet. The long-in-the-works show takes place in 1600 Japan and ostensibly follows a marooned Englishman who finds himself caught in a growing civil war amongst Japanese power players, but the rich story unfolds in surprising ways. Hiroyuki Sanada leads the cast as Lord Yoshii Toranaga and also serves as producer, shepherding the project to ensure historical and cultural accuracy throughout. The result is one of the most thrilling, emotional and engrossing shows of the year.
Here’s everything you need to know about where to watch “Shogun.”
Where is “Shōgun” streaming?
“Shōgun” is an FX original series but it aired on both FX and Hulu, and all 10 episodes of the first season are currently streaming on Hulu. You’ll also find it on Disney+ through the Hulu integrated app.

As usual, this year’s primetime ceremony occurred one week after the corresponding Creative Arts Emmys – a two-night event primarily focused on artistic and technical accomplishments. Freshman FX drama “Shogun” came out on top there with 14 wins, passing “Game of Thrones” (which won 12 on three occasions) as the new record-holder for most single-season victories (drama series). “Shogun” also flew past the overall record of 13 wins from HBO’s 2008 limited series “John Adams.” How many more can it add to its finally tally tonight?
