Scouting Report
Francellis “Frankie” Montas came over as the second piece (behind Avisail Garcia) in the three-team Jake Peavy deal. He was seen a raw pitcher with good stuff, as evidenced by the strong strikeout numbers (9.9 K/9 in 2012-2013) but unimpressive core results. But he seemed to put it together in 2014, where in 15 starts (mostly in High-A, Double-A) he posted a 1.44 ERA, sub-1 WHIP and struck out a batter an inning against a very good walk rate. More impressive were the scouting reports of the life on his mid-to-upper 90s fastball (got over 100 a few times in the Arizona Fall League in 2014), a slider that flashed plus and an emerging change-up. He only got 15 starts due to meniscus surgeries on both knees, and he is a big-bodied guy so injury concerns are worth monitoring.
In 2015 with Double-A Birmingham, Montas continued to do well, earning his MLB debut with the White Sox in September. His success hinges on questions of command, mostly. The fastball has some natural movement in the upper 90s, but flattens when he over-throws. The slider is much the same.
The White Sox flipped him to the Dodgers after the 2015 season and he eventually landed with Oakland where he earned a rotation spot.
