Mel Parsons returns with a hypnotic new single ‘Carry On’ - her first since 2018’s award-winning album, 'Glass Heart'. Written at Parsons’ home in Lyttelton, and produced in Ōtautahi at LOHO by Josh Logan, the new song showcases Parsons’ trademark smoky vocals and lyrical prowess, set against an epic sonic backdrop led by multi-instrumentalist Logan.
The award-winning artist says the words and music just fell together “It was great to be back in a room playing and recording with the band, especially after the weirdness and uncertainty of 2020.”
The release of ‘Carry On’ and the upcoming tour sees Parsons hinting at new music on the horizon. It follows on from the success of her 2018 critically-acclaimed fourth album 'Glass Heart' (made in LA with legendary producer Mitchell Froom) which earned her the award for ‘Best Folk Artist / Te Kaipuoro Taketake Toa at the 2020 Aotearoa Music Awards. The album was also a finalist for the 2019 Taite Music Prize and Top 20 finalist for the APRA Silver Scroll Award.
The success of 'Glass Heart' followed a string of accolades for Parsons, whose debut album 'Over My Shoulder' and her sophomore album 'Red Grey Blue' were both finalists for Folk Album of the Year. This is all in addition to her 2015 released album 'Drylands' which spent 51 weeks in the IMNZ Album charts and won a Tui for Best Engineer. 'Drylands' also garnered a Silver Scroll finalist nod for ‘Get Out Alive’ in 2015 and the 2016 NZCMA Best Song for ‘Alberta Sun’.
Along with international tours and festival performances in recent times, Parsons has been a well-loved fixture on the national touring circuit for the past ten years, with a beguiling voice and a disarming line of humour that has won her a very dedicated fan base. Parsons is also a cast member of Kiwi musical supergroup ‘Fly My Pretties‘, with sell out tours and festival performances throughout Australasia.
