Born Jason Andrew Williams, Don Yute's introduction to the entertainment world is like that of his contemporaries: by chance and by being in the right place at the right time. After gaining a reputation for his freestyle, a friend introduced him to Legend Disco. This proved to be just the opportunity that he needed. Don Yute's first single "Loving Excess" on the "Pepper Seed Riddim" was released in 1993 for Dave Kelly , which he quickly followed with the successful hit "Hardcore" produced by Steelie and Cleevie , "You Own The Man" for Dave Kelly again She Gone for Tony Kelly, Living In A Dream for Jeremy Harding the Producer of Beenieman’s hit Who Am I and Mommy for Legendary producer Bobby Digital noted as the first song for Mothers from a dancehall MC. Don Yute opened for Shabba Ranks Patra and Mad Cobra as a young artist and has toured with some of the biggest names in Hip Hop and R&B such as G Unit , BG , Ray J , Yung Yang Twins, Lil Jon and has also gotten songs featured on a few EA Sports Video Games and Grand Theft Auto and got his song Sweat featured in the Movie Havoc starring Ann Hathaway and Akon performed a the words from his song This Boy Here in the MTV produced film Love Songs Starring Monica.
In an industry dominated by "rude yutes" and "bad bwoys", deejay Don Yute emerged on the dancehall scene as a unique figure. Born in Kingston Jamaica and raised in Port Antonio in an educated family, he pursued a dream normally aspired to by young boys in inner city communities. Whereas these youths sought dancehall as a means to escape poverty and depravation, Don Yute uses his deejay skills to satisfy his need to express his thoughts and release constrained feeling. However, Don Yute' background makes him no stranger to the struggle or pain for that matter. Just after landing a deal with Capitol Records just about the time "Row The Boat" became his most popular song, Don Yute headed first to Atlanta and then Miami. It was while in Atlanta that a masked Gunman almost took his life shooting him in the chest scarring his lungs. Boobilous or The Golden child as he is also called recounts the incident as a dark time in his life and only through God's grace and the support of his family, friends and fans was he able to make it through.
Sufficiently healed physically, mentally and spiritually, Don Yute has put that sordid incident behind and has returned to his old ways and has bounced back more focused and determined than before. After establishing his own Golden Child Label, Don Yute began turning out a slew of self-produced singles as well as productions for other established artistes such as Akon, Pitbull, Trina, Trick Daddy, Etana, Beenie Man, and Spragga Benz and is mentioned by reggae superstar Sean Paul as his mentor and another one of dancehall’s biggest names Mr. Vegas said it was Don Yute who gave him a chance in the beginning of his career. His name is mentioned in interviews by some of the hugest names in this dancehall genre for some reason or the other so it keeps him as a Phenomenon Classic Legend that people can never forget.
In the United States, Don Yute has recorded with multi-platinum producer Jermaine Dupri (So So Def Records), recording the RIAA certified gold selling singles "Sexiest" and "Hardcore Wuk" for So So Def Bass All Stars compilation CD part 1 and 2. He also worked with Jazze Pha ,Dallas Austin, Beats By The Pound ,Lil' Jon, Jim Johnson (Lil Wayne: Lollipop), Mr. Collipark (Hurricane Chris, Soulja Boy), Lenky, Sly and Robie, Family Man Barrett, Stephen McGregor. Lil Jon has him on the original Move Bitch track on the BIA BIA album, and Ying Yang has him on their set, Me and My Brother.
Don Yute describes his unique deejay style as a "WORLD HOP" THE OTHER SIDE OF DANCEHALL! When it comes to performing, he is energetic, spontaneous and focused expect surprises - he is definitely a hardcore artist with passion for his craft. He has performed in shows such as Reggae Sunsplash , Red Stripe Road Show Teen Splash and Sting . Don Yute has recently released albums in Europe on Ali Campbell's (UB40) record label Oracabessa Records and another album in Japan titled The Golden Child for Formula Recordings. He is not one to limit himself and is known to ride any riddim, track or beat he hears with mood, tone, feeling, and appealing originality.
His style is all his own, and he has a flava and texture that is at the forefront of much of the music revolution today. He is an outstanding artist and a phenomenal talent.
