The best (and only) Acrylic Markers!!! Comparable to Posca
5 out of 5 stars
The best (and only) Acrylic Markers!!! Comparable to Posca
TLDRI’m a professional artist and these brush tip (and the bullet tip option) Sharpie Creative Acrylic Markers are the best markers and paint markers I’ve ever used. These are comparable only to Posca (paint PENS with roller balls, not Acrylic Markers), but they’re more accessible, a better deal and the better choice for general population versus Posca or literally any other brand.I am a fine artist who went to MIAD. About 15 years ago my search for fine tip acrylic paint markers started. My medium of choice was acrylic paint on canvas, and sharpies on everything else. Years ago I searched and searched hoping Sharpie would have an acrylic option. They didn’t.This is when I discovered the Japanese company Posca. They hadn’t made their way into US art yet. Now Posca are sold in public non speciality art stores such as Blick across from MIAD. Poscas are amazing, however they are not “markers” they are “paint pens”. So Posca have a little roller ball in each pen and are full of actual paint which you need to shake and shake to activate. They also require significant dry time (the Poscas).I was out grabbing some groceries and I always make a walk down the stationary isle. I literally stopped in my tracks and gasped upon seeing “Sharpie Creative Acrylic Markers”. The ones at the market were “bullet tip” which is the usual standard. I bought them and came home and tested them in my sketchbook. Holy crap was I floored by the quality, the saturation, the lack of dryness, no need to shake, how smooth the writing felt, the entire lack of bleeding and the ability to layer colors!! The color is so saturated I was floored that the ink didn’t at all bleed through the paper. Even Posca does if you do too many coats/layers/passes of the marker. After falling in love with the bullet tip, I was excited to see they had a “brush tip” style. This is the only way you’re going to get very thin crisp paint lines with the ease of application of an extremely high quality marker. Although this review is for the brush tip version, I am also speaking of the bullet tip since I bought those first and I feel the information is extremely relevant.Don’t ever buy “normal” markers again (I know I won’t!), and I am very serious. With all my years of creating art and testing supplies, the performance and value for the money is absolutely amazing. I have a lot of Crayola because it’s an amazing high quality brand (for simple needs) and I have a lot of Prismacolor, however I will never buy Crayola markers again (probably not even Prismacolor again tbh), or any marker really. These are perfect for crafts, marking boxes, coloring books, making signs, kids crafts, wall drawing, detail painting, professional projects, comic inking, illustrations, and really literally anything you can think of. Just remember if it’s not a “typical” surface you will need to do a coat or spray of sealant (clear coat spray; matte in my opinion. Or you can use my secret favorite, painting plain Mod(ge) Podge as a finishing coat). Remember there are bullet tip and fine tip. Bullet will be great for actual marker uses. The brush tips are great for fine lines, writing, detail work, calligraphy and things like that.I always get messy full of paint with Posca, the flow of actual paint can be strange or too much at times and the need to occasionally *pump* the tip leads to pools of paint if not careful. However, with either style of these Sharpie Creative Markers my hands didn’t have paint on them after, and if any paint does get on you or somewhere you don’t want it, simply wipe away with a damp cloth. Acrylic paint is very forgiving. One last thing, for some reason the quality of the black brush tip I got was not as good as any of the others. It was the only one I was any type of not impressed with. It seemed to be a paint saturation issue in the tip. And honestly I imagine if you shake these that will distribute the ink inside the marker. The brush tip style does seem to have some sort of shaker mechanism inside, I wasn’t positive if this was a feature because some when shaken didn’t make a sound. This probably just means I need to legitimately shake them, which is a non issues, especially compared to Posca.Buy them, give them a try, they are really nice.

Just testing these out, they’re already a quick favorite.

Love the brush tips, which are surprisingly scarce in the acrylic marker market.

The colors are beautiful.

And these are OPAQUE. Quickly and easily cover up the other colors for easy layered sketching or fixing mistakes.

The paint doesn’t pill, even with a couple layers.

Possibly most impressively, they work like a dream on black paper. I’ve had a thin black paper sketchbook (110 gsm) kicking around for quite some time, but hadn’t found a medium I liked to make any use of it.

After doodling on some heavy weight white paper and being surprised by how well they performed, I gave them a shot on my black paper sketchbook and I’m in love. Didn’t even damage the super thin paper!

Will have to practice a bit more to figure out what works and what doesn’t on the black paper (notice the difference between the white ghost kitty 1st doodle vs unicorn last doodle), I have no doubt a little elbow grease will bring out way better results than what I have pictured.

Overall, great product, love them on day 1.

If Sharpie *ever* sees this: put out more colors! These shades are gorgeous and I’d love to see more!

I LOVE THESE PENS! No nib pumping, no ripping up your paper, lovely brush tips that don't fray. The color palette is small, but versatile. The pens hold a good amount of paint. The paint is reasonably opaque, depending on the color of the surface you're using. I've used them on (thick) paper, wood, plastic, and canvas with great success, and in conjunction with acrylic paint, gel pens, collage, and canvas. They take acrylic varnish very well. Absolutely recommended.

Sharpie, can we have more colors and can you sell them singly? Pretty please?

Changed my review to 5 stars. I’ve been using them and they really are amazing. I will definitely be repurchasing them. My main complaint is that you can’t buy individual colors. I go through black faster than any of my other colors and I’d love to be able to buy like a 2 or 3 pack of just black instead of needing to buy a whole set for just the black marker.

I really like these markers. I haven’t used them much yet, but they’re very pigmented and smooth to write with. The first photo is with the flash on, second is without, and third photo is how much they bleed through to the back of the paper. This was a very thin notebook paper, so I don’t think they’d bleed through something thicker like an actual art paper. They do not dry quickly, though. I’d buy these again and would love more color options.

These are very nice markers at a good price. I purchased both the regular tip and fine tip. They work well for detail work on my ceramics. The color flows well and smoothly. My only complaint is the color may change, depending on the base color you’re painting on. At least that’s been my experience so far. Most of the colors look as you would expect, but there were a few that changed hue. That may not be a problem when you use them on on paper or canvas, but I’ve noticed it on my ceramics. I still would recommend these markers, I think they work well, have good color at a fair price

Ok right away just doing a simple color test on black plastic I knew I loved this ink/paints formula. It is opaque and can be overlapped without removing itself from smooth surfaces. The Achilles heel of paint pens is the fact that once you put a mark down if you try and go back and spot fill you'll end up pulling up what you just put down, I believe the brush tip which has a good amount of play not too soft not too stiff is partially the reason and the other is the formula that they use is a very high quality. Each color including white is bright and vibrant and while I have used other paint sets in the past there's always been a slight transparency or it was incredibly thick and often would dry out on the nib. Now the paint can still smear but as long as you're aware of that that's actually one of the strong suits of these pens which allow colors to be right up next to each other or even being able to spot fill if your stroke was too hasty. Now I'm sure plastic was left off all of the surfaces you can apply it to most likely because of how smooth it is and because of the inks ability to go on smoothly it's pretty easy to scratch. I would treat it how you would anything you would airbrush paint and put a protective clear coat over it if it's something that will be handled and that would have a chance to normally scratch but on a surface with a little 'tooth' it won't be an issue. These are what chalk markers wish they could be, bright, vibrant and easy to lay down. There's a reason artists like the classic sharpie it glides across paper, art board etc smoothly with a consistent line and these are just the same quality of instrument. I think I found a new favorite, I highly recommend the brush variety. Oh and the 'store horizontally' is a bigger deal then they make it as most pens are stored horizontal (cases, drawers etc) and most paint pens need to be kept vertical to drain out the paint from the tip or it dries an clogs effectively killing the pen, but not these :) .

Love this markers, they paint smoothly and don’t blob like other paint markers. Colours are brilliant and cover well.

Arrived before time stated and in good order. Complete coverage with just one coat, no streaks and, as stated, they don't bleed through even the thinnest of paper. Will have to see if there's other sets for more colors. Great product. Here, in Australia, they are a bit pricey but, to me, well worth it. I haven't had them long so can't say how long they'll last but I do like them a lot.
