Unlike a traditional power poll, it is inevitable that there will be major shifts in our College Football Playoff Committee style ranking system from week to week. We now have two weeks or really two data points to compare and as mentioned last week, this poll is not necessarily who is the best team, but rather whose body of work through two weeks is the best.
After this week though, the polls, whether they be our CFP committee style, our power rankings, the Massey composite rankings or the Sagarin rankings, all agree, the Alabama Crimson Tide are #1. The Tide's week one win over USC was good enough for #6 in the ranking system, but what we are saying here is that Bama's two week body of work with wins over USC and Western Kentucky, is the best resume out there.
Bama is followed by Wisconsin, Texas and Arkansas.
The power poll that feeds into this ranking system is more what you might expect out of the Top 25 or the other polls and currently has Alabama at #1, followed by Ohio State, Florida State and Michigan.
With several big games this week, such as Alabama-Ole Miss, Ohio State-Oklahoma and Michigan State-Notre Dame, you can expect fairly seismic shifts in this each week. Eventually what should happen is that teams with undefeated records will actually be rated lower than those with one loss, etc as the opposition the record was compiled against will be inferior.
BC looks to notch its first ACC win since 2014 at Virginia Tech, the Hokies coming off the emotional loss to Tennessee in the Battle at Bristol. The Book favors Tech in this one, with the Eagles a 7.5 point underdog.
Speaking of the Vegas spread, the Book enjoyed a solid bounce back week after the disaster of week one, with a 27-19 record, good for 58.7 winning percentage.
Enjoy the games and Go Eagles!
Note: the Massey composite rankings are as of Tuesday night, September 13.
