Since there's no good news from the big club, let's take a look down on the farm and see how some of the prospects are doing. (By the way, didn't there used to be daily recaps of the minor league games?) There's plenty of content on the site already, I've just noticed that they aren't around any more.
Sorted by level and ordered by Fangraphs prospect ranking within the level
Reno (won 12-10 over Salt Lake):
- Jorge Barrosa: went 2-4 with a double, a walk, and a strikeout. Current OPS is .841
- Justin Martinez: gave up a two-out walk to David Fletcher, but picked up his sixth save with a strikeout of Trey Cabbage
- Dominic Fletcher: went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run. He seems to be finally breaking out of his slump.
- Blaze Alexander: led off the fifth with a triple, and started a 5-4-3 double play
- Bryce Jarvis: the transition to the bullpen hit a snag. Called on to pitch the 8th with the Aces leading 9-4, he went walk, single, walk (with a wild pitch allowing a run to score), walk, sac fly, flyout, walk. All five baserunners he allowed scored, as the Bees took a 10-9 lead. The single and two of the walks were against left handed batters; he's now walking 13% of lefties while striking out just 16.667%. By comparison, he's walking 10.7% of righties and striking out 30.5%
Amarillo (lost 7-4 at Tulsa):
- Jordan Lawlar: 2-5 with an RBI double in the second inning. After a slow start, his OPS is now up to .836
- Deyvison De Los Santos: 2-4, both hits were singles. He's a prospect because of his power tool, and he has struggled in the power department this year.
- Ivan Melendez: hit a bomb nearly completely out of the ballpark to open the scoring. Added a single in the third (but was out on what may have been a missed hit-and-run) and another in the 8th as the Soddies tried to stage a comeback. He's now batting .325 with an OPS of 1.109 at Amarillo, albeit with a .400 BABIP. The home run was his first AA home run away from the wind tunnel which is Hodgetown.
- A.J. Vukovich: set up the Melendez home run by beating out a ground ball to short, showing the kind of hustle the big club is lacking. Also struck out twice. He doesn't look great in center field, but I don't think anyone is expecting him to play there in the future.
- J.J. D'Orazio: 0-4, dropping his average at Amarillo to .315. If you don't know about D'Orazio, that's forgiveable. I don't believe he appears on any prospect list except at Fangraphs, where he slots in at 35+ FV with much more heralded prospect Adrian Del Castillo. He was one of the players acquired from the Blue Jays in the Joakim Soria trade in 2021. Prior to this year, he had shown decent plate discipline but no power; this year, he picked up 28 extra base hits during his stay at Hillsboro and has added five more in limited action at Amarillo, meaning that exactly half of his career extra base total (66) has come this season. He's also only 21, so keep an eye out here.
- Jake Rice: The 2021 9th round pick has been struggling for the second straight season in Amarillo, but tossed two scoreless innings last night, allowing just one hit and striking out three.
Hillsboro (lost at Spokane, 7-2):
- Tommy Troy: (he's not on the ranking yet, but he would easily be the top prospect of the guys at Hillsboro.) He picked up another single, but struck out twice and picked up his first professional error.
- Dylan Ray: had a super rough start, lasting just 0.2 innings and giving up 2 hits and 3 walks. Listher Sosa stranded the bases full, so he only allowed two runs, but both were walked in. He did strike out two.
- Wilderd Patino: led off the game with a double and later picked up another double.
- Christian Cerda: was removed midway through the game, after two plate apperances and drawing a walk. I have not been able to find out why.
- Juan Corniel: picked up a walk, but saw his OPS fall below the Wine Line (.550) as he continues to struggle at the plate.
Visalia (won 6-1 at Lake Elsinore):
- Jansel Luis: 3 hits (one a home run) to raise his average to .300. This is his first season in the US, and he's just been at Visalia for 12 games, but he's showing the potential that has him as a future MLB contributor.
- Cristofer Torin: Torin and Luis have similar profiles, but Torin has struggled in his time at Visalia. He finally broke out of his funk, picking up two hits (one a triple) and scoring a run.
- Jack Hurley: (I'm more unsure where to slot Hurley and Sim, but this seems fair to start). Hurley singled and doubled (and also struck out twice) and his OPS at Visalia is now 1.184, showing that his aggressive placement was warranted. He could move up to Hillsboro soon.
- Jose Fernandez: picked up a double in five at-bats as the DH
- Kevin Sim: Sim had a batting average higher than his OBP at the complex, and picked up a single while his batting average at Visalia dropped to .250. So far, he hasn't shown the plate discipline he showed in college (where he walked almost as often as he struck out) but there is plenty of time.
If people enjoy reading this, I may look into writing some deep dives into various games/affiliates. It's certainly more fun to watch them than it is to watch the big club right now.
