Symphony No. 3 in B minor, "Ilya Muromets", Opus 42 by Reinhold Gliere. A terrific late-Romantic symphony. Get an unabridged version, in particular the Rediscovery Records CD by Scherchen/Vienna State Opera Orchestra (available online). It's amazing, especially considering it was originally recorded in October 1952!
'Also Sprach Zarathustra' , 'Ein Heldenleben', and 'Der Rosenkavalier Suite' by Richard Strauss.
'Scythian Suite' by Prokofiev.
Symphony #2 and 'The Poem of Ecstasy' by Scriabin.
I chose this partly because I heard Horowitz himself play it (on two successive nights!) at Alice Tully Hall in NYC. One of the great memories of my life.
And this, which we heard Martha Argerich play at Carnegie Hall. It was an honor and joy to have heard two such great artists - part of the reason I will always have fond memories of NYC. ~
