Ronnie Milsap is a great artist, one of the best in my opinion, yet I didn't know who he is until sometime in the past year so when I took it up on myself to dive into some older music. I don't get why he isn't talked about or mentioned more often.

wasn't he derivative country pop? maybe his style was just too much of a copy of others to be really distinctive

From reading a little about him, it's my understanding some of his songs are considered pop-crossover and appealing to a wider audience than just that of country music.

his first album was probably more country than he crossed over in the late 70's maybe. Dolly Parton crossed over in 1977 with Here You Come Again

Ha! When I saw the title of this thread I thought of a Milsap song I liked. It was the one the OP posted.

However, there are others:

I saw him perform at the Valley Forge Music Fair in Pennsylvania back in the late 70's. I think it was 77 or 78. He put on a very good performance.

I like a lot of his music. He was pretty big in the early to mid 8os.

Compared to the hideous phony country out today, Ronnie Milsap is fine. I do not mind him at all.
