Cnr and JHU team study reveals astrocyte morphogenesis with optical diffraction tomography
A recent study by an international research team has demonstrated the use of Optical Diffraction Tomography (ODT) to analyze the dynamic morphology of astrocytes, key neural support cells. Conducted by scientists from the National Research Council of Italy and Johns Hopkins University, the study, published in Advanced Healthcare Materials, showcases ODT as a label-free, high-resolution imaging technique that allows real-time observation of astrocyte shape changes without interfering with their natural behavior. By generating 3D refractive index maps, the method provides insights into cell volume, dry mass, and surface area, marking its first application to neural cells. This breakthrough offers new opportunities to study astrocyte function, development, and interactions in various environments, with potential implications for understanding neurological health and disease
Panama and Italy sign scientific cooperation agreement
The agreement was signed by Dr. Eduardo Ortega Barría, from Senacyt, and Prof. Maria Chiara Carrozza, president of the National Research Council of Italy
The gut-brain connection in Alzheimer's unveiled with X-rays
Scientists led by the Institute of Nanotechnology of the National Research Council of Italy, in collaboration with the ESRF, the European Synchrotron in Grenoble, France, have discovered how X-ray micro- and nano- tomography can provide clues on the processes that link the gut neurons with those in the brain and may trigger Alzheimer’s. The results are published in Science Advances
CoE MARBLE Project to Establish Croatia's First Centre of Excellence
Over 50 experts met in Zagreb on February 4th, to work on research at the Centre of Excellence in Maritime Robotics and Technologies for Sustainable Blue Economy: the National Research Council of Italy is amongst the key partners with the Institute of Marine Engineering (Cnr-Inm)
The new "nano-oscillator" that explores the boundary between classical and quantum physics
An article published in the scientific journal Optica describes the development of a new experimental device that explores the boundary between classical and quantum physics, allowing the simultaneous observation and investigation of phenomena from both worlds. The instrument was developed in Florence and is the result of collaboration within the extended partnership of the National Quantum Science and Technology Institute (NQSTI), involving the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Florence, the National Institute of Optics of the National Research Council of Italy (Cnr-Ino), as well as the European Laboratory for Nonlinear Spectroscopy (LENS) and the Florence branch of the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN)
Descartes Laboratory 2024-2025
The "Descartes Laboratory" seminar, organized by the Institute for the european intellectual lexicon and history of ideas (Cnr-Iliesi) and La Sapienza Department of Philosophy, is planned to engage with the most recent works on Descartes as well as on 17th-century philosophy and natural philosophy connected with Cartesianism. The Laboratory involves master and graduate students, as well as young post-doc, giving them a space for discussion
