University Policy and Rules Office

We help make policies and rules. Why? The UW is a community of over 90,000 people. That’s more than the population of Bellingham or Santa Barbara. Can you imagine what it would be like to be in a city with no policies?

Policies are vital.

Policies help us run things smoothly by directing the choices and actions of individuals as they work alone or together to carry out the mission of the organization.

We operate more sustainably by putting the time and effort into governance.

The University Policy and Rules Office codifies and publishes policy for all three campuses, including:

• Board of Regents Governance,
• Presidential Orders,
• Faculty Code and Governance,
• Administrative Policy Statements,
• Student Governance and Policies.

The office assists in the development, review, and maintenance of these orders and policies for the University and serves as a consultant to the University’s administration and departments for the development, alignment, periodic review, and official publication of University policies.

The director serves as the Washington State Rules Coordinator for the UW. This role and office manage the University’s rule-making process, including the review, creation, amendment, and repeal of the University’s Washington Administrative Code rules (Title 478 WAC). In carrying out this function, we work with the University unit promulgating the rule, the Attorney General’s Office, and the Office of the Board of Regents for final adoption.
