Ukraine's Valerii Odainyk has said adapting to his injuries has been difficult but that training for the Invictus Games has helped him regain control over his body and mind. A sapper with the 93rd Separate Mechanized Brigade lost both his legs and several fingers in a mine explosion in January of 2023. Just two years removed from his accident he was on the court on Saturday and helped his Ukraine team win a Bronze Medal.

Canada took on Australia in sitting volleyball at the Invictus Games on Saturday, with Canadian Jeremy Janssens competing. Janssens served as a supply technician in the army and was deployed to Afghanistan. He applied three times previously to take part in the games but wasn't accepted on Team Canada until his fourth attempt.

The UK’s Samantha May didn’t let a let a devasting leg injury end her active lifestyle – she refused to let it. Turning to adaptive sports, she found new purpose and strength. She left everything she had in the pool, but her race didn’t end at the finish line. Her first instinct was to turn and find her teammate Angela Holland, cheering her on with the same fire shad just raced with. A true demonstration of camaraderie, her support for her fellow competitors was as relentless as her own pursuit of excellence

USA's Figary wins gold four medals in swimming at Invictus Games

Lydia Figary had a life-altering Parachute accident in July 2022 as a member of the US Marine Corp. The accident caused a tib-fib open fracture and a traumatic brain injury. Participating in the Invictus games has played a critical role in her recovery, offering not only physical rehabilitation but also a supportive community that has uplifted her mentally and emotionally. Just 2 and half years removed from her accident she won 4 gold medals in swimming (50M Freestyle, 50M Breaststroke, 50M Backstroke, 100M Freestyle)

Australia's Miln takes home four gold medals in swimming at Invictus Games

David Miln served as a Royal Marine Commando and Mine Warfare and Clearance Diving officer for the United kingdom Military and Australian Navy. In December 2022 while on representational duties he had an accident with a snow removal machine, where he rolled on top of both his daughters to protect them before entering the machine causing him to lose both his legs. Sports has played a major role in his recovery as it's kept him grounded, focused and allows him to be the best version of himself. He applies for Invictus Games to show his daughters no matter what happens anything is possible, and he proved just that winning 4 gold medals in swimming (50M Freestyle, 50M Breaststroke, 50M Backstroke, 100M Freestyle) and 1 Silver medal in the 4x50M Mixed Relay.

Canada's Shields second, Nie fourth in 100M freestyle heat

Wenshaung Nie was keeping it loose before her heat race. Dancing to some music as the crowd and fellow Canadian Kate Shields cheer her on. Wenshuang was a Naval Diesel Mechanic and a Medical Officer. She jumped at the opportunity to join Team Canada to connect with those who shared similar challenges involving her mental health struggles after being diagnosed with PTSD. Kate finished second in her heat for 100M freestyle, while Wenshaung finished fourth.

Canada's Janssens takes second place in his heat in men's 50M freestyle

Jeremy Janssens served with pride as a supply technician in the Army. He deployed to Afghanistan during his service. The impact Jeremy’s injury has had in his life has taught him a superior sense of resilience and perseverance. Jeremy finished 2nd in his 50-meter freestyle heat, less than a second behind the heat winner, with fellow Canadian Charles Arsenault placing 4th.

Canadian Mulford finishes first in her heat in 50M breaststroke

Shan Mulford served as a Logistics Officer in the Canadian Army. She became motivated to apply to the Invictus Games when she watched her wife compete in the 2022 Warrior Games. She was inspired by the overwhelming sense of community, deep bonds, and the healing power of the nature of these kinds of events. She came first in her heat as three Canadians led the way, with Mulford advancing through to the finals.

Mary Porter reignited her passion for the slopes at Invictus Games

Mary Porter of the U.S. Team refuses to left ALS define her. A retired Army Major and former Brigade Surgeon, Mary was an avid skier for 50 years before her ALS diagnosis in 2021 left her in a wheelchair. Instead of giving, up she adapted, learning to sit ski and reignited her passion for the slopes. “When I’m on the snow, I no longer have ALS,” she says. She competed at the Invictus Games Sit-Ski competition with joy and determination, embracing every moment and proving sport is a powerful force for hope and transformation.

Married couple from New Zealand share an unforgettable Invictus Games moment

Former Army service members Buffy Little and Alana Blackman from Team New Zealand have overcome breast cancer three times between them. For Buffy, sport became a turning point in her recovery journey, helping her recognize the importance of mental health support.
