Synopsis
The recruits are excited for the day's mission, and especially the mystery of who Heatwave is going to put in charge. Hot Shot and Wedge immediately assume it's them, while Medix already knows it's not him, as he's getting the role of rescue victim. As Hot Shot and Wedge start to come to blows, Hoist manages to break them up and that, as the arriving Heatwave says, is why Hoist is being appointed leader for today's rescue.
With Medix sitting on a ledge halfway down a cliff, the rest of the team assembles at the top. Heatwave heads off to attend to another emergency, leaving the recruits to handle the rescue under Hoist's leadership. Hoist is about to outline the plan he's come up with, when Hot Shot interrupts him—Hot Shot has his own plan to fly down and rescue Medix with his jet mode. As Hot Shot takes off, Hoist protests that this is a bad idea, and Wedge takes that as his cue to adapt the plan in his own way, jumping on Hot Shot's back so he can grab Medix off the rock ledge. Unfortunately as Hoist was trying to explain, the problem is that the crevasse is too narrow for Hot Shot to maneuver and with Wedge on top of him, he's unable to pull up until Wedge moves to his tail end.
Wedge and Hot Shot resume arguing until Whirl points out they still need to rescue Medix and that Hoist has a plan. Wedge immediately jumps the gun and digs a hole down to the ledge, which startles Medix so much he almost falls off. Hot Shot heads down, despite Hoist's concerns. Another argument breaks out between Hot Shot and Wedge, and the ledge, already weakened by the tunneling, starts to give way. At Hoist's command, Whirl transforms and manages to catch the trio below as the ledge gives way, but they're too heavy for her to lift out. While Hot Shot and Wedge argue some more, Hoist puts his original plan into action, hooking a line across the chasm and using his other tow line to hook Whirl just as her strength gives out. They're then able to get Hot Shot over to Wedge's tunnel so he can help pull the others up. Heatwave finally returns to find the rescue complete, and Hoist suggests Medix tell the story of how they got him out of danger.

Quotes
"Help. Help. I have never been so scared. I may pass out from terror."
- —Medix, sitting on a ledge.
"Won't somebody please rescue me from this terrible nightmare? I'm just a poor helpless child with his whole life left to live."
- —Medix, still sitting on a ledge.
"Oh, I've been saving my favorite one for a moment just like this. [southern accent] Help. Help. This is all just too much for poor, lil' old me. I fear I may swoon. [normal voice] Oh! Swoon is an antiquated human expression for fainting. Impossible for a bot, of course, but quite appropriate for the situation, were I indeed human."
- —Medix dangling from Whirl while Hot Shot and Wedge cling to him.
