Burn Out (Diaclone)
From Transformers Wiki
The name or term "Burnout" refers to more than one character or idea. For a list of other meanings, see Burnout (disambiguation). |
- Burn Out is a Diaclone vehicle from Diaclone or a Velocitronian Autobot from the Generation 1 continuity family.
Though she's not the fastest or biggest bot around, Burn Out (also Burnout) is a warrior known for her determination and stoicism. Unfortunately, she's also known for her stubbornness, which frequently leads her to argue with allies like her partner, the Diaclone project pilot Dia Cinders.
Fortunately, Burn Out is heavily armed with an array of weapons from pulse rifles to concussion levelers, which surely helps in venting any frustration caused by butting heads.

Timelines
Burn Out was a mech created as part of the Diaclone project, partnered with the ambitious and dedicated Dia. To aid in targeting the mech's extensive weapons array while maintaining balance and maneuverability, Burn Out's central computer was equipped with an artificial intelligence based on Dia's personality. Unfortunately, as both Dia and the AI were incredibly stubborn, the two ended up arguing enough that Dia preferred to turn off the voice command function and pilot the mech herself, despite the physical exertion required to do so. Timelines Burn Out profile
Crossing dimensions in pursuit of the Waruders, Lift-Ticket/Cline and Burn Out/Dia found themselves stranded on Axiom Nexus. Following a Waruder signal underground, the Diaclone team bumped into a group of Cybertron's most wanted criminals. Startled, they fled the scene. The groups reconvened as they both wound up within the Waruder hive. Joining forces with C-81's group, as well as General Optimus Prime and Sergeant Hound, they did their best to hold the insectoid invaders at bay. During the battle, Dia used her mech to great effectiveness, but begun to become overwhelmed when there appeared to be no end to the Waruder soldiers. Things took a turn for the worse when the Lift-Ticket mech took a serious blow, forcing Dia to use Burn Out to protect her now vulnerable teammate. Thankfully, the Waruders were led off-planet thanks to the collaborative efforts of everyone involved. Cybertron's Most Wanted

After being created, the artificially intelligent Burnout chose its name in reference to the surname of its pilot and personality template, Dia Cinders.
Following the defeat of the Waruders in Axiom Nexus, Dia and Burnout departed the city for their home dimension, only to be caught up in the effects of the Shroud, a cosmic phenomenon affecting travel between universes. Mech and pilot found themselves quantum-mechanically entangled into a mass of formless molten metal which emerged into another dimension that was not their own, where they crashed down to the local version of Earth.
By a stroke of luck, this Earth was home to Spinout, a Diaclone mech from Dia and Burnout's home universe who had been elevated into a true robot lifeform by the technology of this world's Transformers. Spinout's code recognised the metal object as being a fellow Diaclone mech, and the Autobots proceed to use G2 Technology to reconstitute Burnout into its original robotic form. It was only after this was done, however, that Dia and Burnout's fusion became clear, leaving the pair of them trapped as a unique hybrid being known as "Dia Burnout". At times, Dia Burnout would subconsciously make a holographic representation of the trapped human Dia, standing nearby when in robot mode, or behind the driver's seat in vehicle mode.
The Autobots committed to helping Dia regain her own human form, but the lack of template data for that body made it a difficult endeavour. Having learned from the TransTech that beings can have direct counterparts in different universes, Dia Burnout proposed that they look for this world's version of Dia Cinders. To the Autobots' surprise, there was indeed a native Dia, but she was a notorious interstellar criminal, wanted across many human colony worlds.
The Autobots tracked "mirror Dia" to the planet of Epsilon Ariadne, and while the criminal slipped away minutes before they caught up with her, a genetic sample was recovered from her hotel room that would allow Dia to be separated. While the process could be carried out immediately, Dia Burnout declined, instead deciding that they would not be separated until they could catch the criminal herself and prevent her from further tarnishing the name "Dia Cinders". Having picked up another clue, Dia Burnout and their Autobot teammates set out for the planet Velocitron. Masterpiece Diaburnout bio
Legacy VS500 Collection Special Comic
With "mirror Dia" riding aboard, Velocitron Speedia 500 Part 3 Dia Burnout competed in the Speedia 500 for the chance to become leader of Velocitron. In the race, the team scaled a steep cliff to create a shortcut for themselves. Road Rocket called it "cheating", but race official/announcer Cosmos didn't seem to have a problem with it. Velocitron Speedia 500 Part 1 Dia Burnout would ultimately lose to former champion Override. Velocitron Speedia 500 Part 2
In the second week of races, Dia Burnout and mirror Dia found themselves up against a new trio of black-colored racers who dominated the competition. Upon crossing the finish line, Dia Burnout declared to mirror Dia that she was under arrest. Velocitron Speedia 500 Part 3
2019 IDW continuity
A resident of Velocitron, Burn Out was one of the many participants in the Speedia 500, the race to determine the next leader of the planet. Tread & Circuits Part 2 She evaded Mayhem's onslaught, taunting the participants of the ensuing brawl as she did so. Unfortunately she did not win. Didn't even come close, if we're honest. But she didn't die, either! Maybe next time, Burn Out. Tread & Circuits Part 3
Toys
Timelines
- Diaclone 2-pack (Souvenir set, 2015)
- Accessories: Small gun, large gun
- Timelines Burn Out is a redeco of Generations: Thrilling 30 Deluxe Class Skids, transforming into a compact hatchback car of made-up model. She comes with a rifle and a pistol that can combine into a larger rifle, and can be held or peg onto her vehicle sides via 5 mm post. Her robot-mode shoulders have hidden non-firing multi-missile launchers revealed by rotating part of the wheel hub up. The double-blasters attached to her forearms can split up and spread out for a wider firing angle. She has visible light-piping on the back of her head, but her eyes are painted yellow, rendering it useless.
- She was available only in an at-show "Diaclone 2-pack" souvenir set with Lift-Ticket at BotCon 2015.
- This toy was repurposed as Shattered Glass Skids. This mold was also used to make Age of Extinction Rollbar, and was retooled into Generations Crosscut.
Legacy
- Diaclone Universe Burn Out (Deluxe Class, 2022)
- TakaraTomy name: Dia Burnout
- TakaraTomy ID number: TL EX-02
- TakaraTomy release date: January, 2023
- Accessories: Energon axe/rifle, liquid nitrogen rifle, twin electron blaster
- Known designers: Mark Maher (Hasbro), Tomoki Tatsumi (TakaraTomy) , Robby Musso and Emiliano Santalucia (concept art)
- Part of the first wave of the Velocitron Speedia 500 Collection sub-series of Transformers: Legacy, "Diaclone Universe Burn Out" is a redeco and retooling of the main-line Legacy Deluxe Class Skids, with a new "battle mask" head based on that of Crosscut. She transforms into a legally-distinct approximation of a Honda City Turbo, based on the black version of the Diaclone "No. 9 Honda City Turbo" toy.
- Both of her modes modes have multiple 5 mm post holes to mount these accessories, as well as making her compatible with the many "take apart to turn into weapons and armor for other bots" figures released in the prior years (first introduced as the "C.O.M.B.A.T. System" in Siege). Her two silver blasters are designed to combine into a triple-blaster by plugging the double-blaster upside-down into the bottom of the single-barrel one. You can even turn it into a quad-barrel weapon by adding the axe to the top; the silver single-barrel gun nestles neatly into the space behind the axe's handle-grip.
- The Velocitron Speedia 500 Collection was exclusive to Walmart in the US, with Hasbro Pulse receiving limited quantities of the figure. The series went up for pre-order on July 21, 2022, and started arriving in stores by August 1. The series was a TakaraTomy Mall exclusive in Japan, and a Farmers department store exclusive in New Zealand.

Masterpiece
- Dia Burnout (Masterpiece, 2023)
- Masterpiece MP-53+B "Dia Burnout" is a new-head retool and redeco of MP-53 Skids, transforming into a Honda City Turbo featuring opening front doors, an opening hood with engine detailing underneath, an openable rear storage trunk (more on that in a bit), and a basic interior capable of fitting one of the posable Masterpiece human figures. The new head is based on the original Honda City Turbo Diaclone toy's head, rather than the cartoon model from Skids.
- She comes with a slew of accessories: the cartoon-based blaster accessories from Skids (the Turbo Cannon and Double Laser Caster), the toy-based weapons from Reboost (the Pulse Rifle and Concussion Leveler), as well as Reboost's Motocompo scooter. In robot mode, each of the weapons can either peg into the top of the forearms like the original Skids toy (with the Pulse Rifle having a flip-out handle she can grip), or on the outer sides of the forearms via dedicated slots. Unfortunately, it is not possible to equip her with all four weapons at once, as the side-mounting clips will interfere with the top-mounted weapons. The Motocompo can also seat a Masterpiece human figure, but the wheels are fixed so don't go zooming it around.
- Her vehicle-mode trunk is designed to store the Pulse Rifle and Concussion Leveler securely, as well as either the Motocompo (once its handlebars have been folded away) or the remaining two guns. Unfortunately, the other guns and Motocompo are not actually secured in any way, but the fit is tight enough that they don't rattle around much at all. You're not getting everything in there, sorry.
- She also comes with a "ghost pilot" figurine representing the discorporate Dia, a translucent-orange redeco of MP-44's Carly figurine, which can also pilot the aforementioned drone. However, care must be taken as her multiple pinhead-sized balljoints cause her limbs to come apart very easily.
- Finally, she also comes with a bonus sheet of optional stickers, featuring a large Autobot insignia and a Generation 2 Autobot insignia for her hood, and a tiny original Autobot insignia for the Motocompo.
- Dia Burnout was revealed on August 9, 2022, with pre-orders opening the next day. She began shipping in late March of 2023.
Notes
- Burn Out is based on the black coloration of Honda City Turbo (ホンダ・シティ・ターボ), the Diaclone toy whose blue version was used to create Generation 1 Skids.
- The black Honda City Turbo appears on a preliminary 1985 packaging mural.[2] It is unclear if Takara was considering it for use in the Generation 1 line or if the artist was just recycling existing product as a visual reference. (Said mural featured other oddities, such as the red Honda City R which would eventually inspire Reboost as well as the distinctive prototype version of Superion.)
- The trademark "Burn Out" comes from a Cobra-allied Dreadnok, as Fun Publications also held the G.I. Joe Club license at time of development.
- The official product description for Legacy Burn Out reads "He may not be the fastest, but Burn Out is determined to win the Speedia 500." The use of "he" is obviously an error, as Burn Out was explicitly referred to as female by the Hasbro team throughout the Hasbro Pulse livestream revealing her new figure, rather straightforwardly mirroring the original Timelines mech's female pilot.[3]
