Well, it sounds gross, and looks grosser, for sure.
However, when you're having pancakes and bacon, there's nothing better than maple syrup on the bacon.
So, it's the same kind of idea, I guess...sweet with salty/savoury.

I was looking at this thing (which was linked from boingboing yesterday) and I was thinking 'this is great, but these obscene combinations of dessert and fish, steak, pizza etc are just photoshops. Where's the real sausage and ice cream split?'

I once accidentally put garlic butter on a piece of toast with grape jelly.
It was gross.
Back before I decided I didn't want to die of a heart attack at age 30, I used to cook bacon and eggs just about every morning. I'd cook the bacon in the pan, then scramble the eggs in the same pan with the left over bacon fat and grease. So good, so heartclogging.

never heard of strawberry jam and garlic. bout the only odd thing we do with jam in TN. is to put in on a country ham biscuit. on post: the closest thing to this i have heard of was something my roommate wanted to make involving chocolate coverd bacon. i don't think he ever did make any though.

Just last week a friend insisted that we try bacon on vanilla ice cream. It is pretty delicious, I'll admit, but I'm a sucker for salt.
I also LOVE fried chicken strips on waffles with tons of syrup, so ymmv.

The great Christina's Ice Cream in Cambridge, MA makes ice cream with chunks of turkey, stuffing, and cranberries every Thanksgiving. I wish I could say it is surprisingly delicious, but in fact it is nasty.

ditch the almonds and you got something there. I've had caramel pork w/black pepper at a place on Doyers Street (thanks Wino & gaspode) and it was delicious.

i know several people who swear by peanut butter and bacon sandwiches, preferably made with a hamburger roll and nothing else. i love peanut butter and i love bacon, but the thought of putting the two together gives me the jibblies.
caramel bacon, though, i would actually try. then i would get the jibblies.

I've made apple pie with a bacon streusel, and I think the "this isn't bad... I'll finish my piece later" sentiment is right on. Bacon + dessert isn't really a bad combination... but it tastes unnecessary and is hard to really tuck into.

My daughter was watching a cooking show yesterday while visiting her grandfather in the hospital. They showed a sauce made with caramel, mixed with balsamic vinegar, poured over vanilla ice cream. I can't even imagine.

BTW, I am so not a maple syrup/bacon guy. I was however a M&Ms/popcorn guy (when my health permitted) and am still a salty fries/chocolate shake/malt guy.

Another strange combination that's very good is peanut butter and pickle sandwiches. Just make a PB sandwich and dot it with butter pickle slices. When eating, you can't really taste the pickles, but the peanut butter tastes better. It's just... more peanutty.
I have not tried adding jelly. I have no idea how that would taste.

I've eaten peanut butter and bacon sandwiches since I was a kid ( I'm 46), and I still love them. If you haven't tried it, you should. The bacon needs to be crispy, in case you're wondering.

I once poured melted chocolate all over a slice of pizza. It tasted like chocolate, but had pizza texture. I washed it down by drinking the chocolate along with a can of Sprite. Swim practice was not much fun that day.

i love bacon with maple syrup on it, but that looks like way too much sugar with way too little bacon. i think i'd much rather try the bacon dipped in chocolate or something where the bacon wasn't as drowned out.

I've made this, and it was completely awesome. The recipe linked in the FPP is a little more "candy" than "pig" though - I'll have to try it and see if I like it.

I think I'm the only person in the world who can't STAND peanut butter with jelly. I like them both individually, but together...they just cancel out the niceness of each.

A really high quality balsamic vinegar is not only sweet and non-vinegary in flavor, it's syrupy enough that it can be used as an ice cream topping all by itself. I never believed it until a friend brought a bottle back from Italy and made me try a spoonful. It was so good that adding caramel would be pointless.

Courtesy of the other good website, here's a crack page of tastes that, surprisingly, go well together.
Black pepper really does have fruity notes—more so if it's recently ground—that go with melons and berries and such very nicely indeed.
