Reminded me of Ball Four. I love a behind the scenes look at baseball. I always thought being a baseball scout would be a cool job. I'm not so sure about that know. Also, interesting on how the draft changed scouting. All in all, a good read.

I found this book to be very entertaining. The stories that the scouts told about their prospects and other were full of life. They were a special bunch of guys. If you are a baseball fan, you will enjoy this book. Two thumbs up.

While three decades old, this book still provides a fantastic description of the history, lifestyles, and philosophy of baseball scouting. I learned a great deal from reading it. It was especially fun for me to read about arguments regarding the top prospects in an early 1980's draft, because we know how their careers turned out. The fascination and frustration in both baseball scouting and baseball analytics is that they lack total prescience. There's no such thing as a pitching prospect, and there's no predicting baseball--but what fun would there be if we could?

I read this book years ago, and was glad that it came out again (bought it for my dad too)

If you ever played baseball, or love it with a passion...you have to read this book. Most people do not realize how critical scouting is to both the development and history of the game, and Kevin Kerrane makes you fall in love with these scouts and what they do. They are admirable in their dedication to the game, and are always putting their reputations on the line.

I highly recommend this book to anyone with a love for the game.

This book was a Christmas gift for my husband who loves baseball and he said the book is awesome. Due to ordering the book around Christmas I did have some shipping delays but other than that the book itself came in great shape.

5.0 out of 5 stars A"grand slam"of a book.

If you remotely like baseball and are interested in scouting or where players come from. This..Is a wonderful book. I wish i had the vocabulary to put into words what I'm thinking. In the modern age the computer has shifted the balance toward stats over the eye. I firmly belive in the old methods being backed up by data but not overtaken. The "stuff" is everything and if you see it you just know. As a scout myself I wish i was back in the twenties or thirties hanging out with Leon Hamilton or Branch Rickey. Alas time travel isn't possible....Unless you count flying backwards on a jet through a time zone and gaining an hour !!! But this book has managed to transport the reader back in time and to a better time i think. Read it. It's brilliant.

This is not a guide on how to scout, but a fantastic look at the history of scouting and the people who helped build the sport I love.
