Special Invitation Films

The festival closes with A Boatload of Wild Irishmen, a biography of early documentarist Robert Flaherty whose name crowns YIDFF’s Grand Prix. Our other special invitations include: Far from Afghanistan is an omnibus project by John Gianvito, Jon Jost and other filmmakers who take a critical look at the longest overseas war in US history. Nuchigafu—Life Is a Treasure uncovers facts about the military’s role in “group suicides” among civilians during the Battle of Okinawa, and the fates of Korean men and women brought to Okinawa during the war. Haneda Sumiko captures modern dance pioneer Akiko Kanda’s extraordinary drive to perform in And Then Akiko Is . . . . Ogawa Shinsuke’s 1967 Report from Haneda bristles with clashing protesters and riot police and the death of a student.

YIDFF Network Special Screenings

The YIDFF Network is a volunteer group that was brought together for the inaugural YIDFF in 1989, as an initiative of Ogawa Shinsuke. Since that time, the group has continued to be active on a wide range of levels. YIDFF Network Special Screenings are organized for each Festival, with the intention of presenting films from the volunteers’ original perspectives.

Yamagata University presents: East and Central European Documentary Films after the End of the Cold War
1989 is the year YIDFF started, and also when eastern and central European countries experienced the fall of the Iron Curtain. Documentary filmmakers have recorded social and cultural changes in this area for over 20 years since. Viewing some of these films submitted to YIDFF, some of which were invited to past festivals, we will discuss the historical development of documentary filmmaking in this region.

Yamagata Film Criticism Workshop

This project aims to encourage thinking, writing, and reading about film, using documentaries as an entry point, while offering immersion in the live atmosphere of an international film festival. Participants will receive guidance from professional film critics and write their own articles, which will be presented publicly.
