Visualizing Baserunning Data
Daniel does a terrific job at presenting the data in graphical form. He notes that my idea of "0 to 15mph" might have an issue, but really, it doesn't. You'd get similar results if you ask "feet covered in first two seconds". I'm not saying that acceleration doesn't change after two seconds (as we can see by his chart, it most decidedly does), but you have to draw some sort of line somewhere, to establish what we want out of "acceleration". Maybe we should just not use the term acceleration, and just call it "initial burst of speed". McCuth and Perez have the same "initial burst of speed" in these two particular plays. We can just leave it at that, for that segment of the run.
