Spahn’s hand against the Dodgers
Poz brings up the interesting history of Spahn:
It’s even more striking when you break it down by inning:
Pirates: 215 2/3
Cardinals: 215 2/3
Redlegs: 198 1/3
Giants: 189 1/3
Phillies: 163
Cubs: 95 2/3
Dodgers: 3 2/3
Um … Spahn pitched just 3 2/3 innings against the Dodgers? Over four years? We’re talking Warren Spahn here? One of the most durable and workmanlike pitchers in baseball history?
He gets an explanation from Bill James, regarding the Dodgers lineup being heavily RHH stacked, and so, teams refused to start their LHP. And then on a related tangent: LHH Duke Snider faced so few LHP, that he had an unfair platoon advantage, when compared to his contemporaries.
***
Randy Johnson also seems to have an unfair disadvantage, in that he faced something like 10% LHH, while his LHP peers face 20%+. But, it's also possible that teams were SO scared of RJ, that they put a clearly inferior RHH, thinking they'd get the platoon advantage, even though overall, they didn't get it overall.
