Segura’s Baserunning: RIP
I'm surprised it took this long to get a sensible reading of the already-exist rule. This is different from the infamous Lloyd Moseby running, because that was all part of one continuous play. With Segura, he was already on second base when a new batter came to bat. And that very fact now means that he can't run in reverse under any circumstances. No bad tag-ups, no avoiding fielders, etc.
Imagine for example being caught in a rundown between second and third, and instead of slowing down to slide into second (and be putout), you run all-ou?t and run passed second on your way to first (which has been abandoned). The existing rule has put a wall for you at second base.
(In any case, Segura was tagged out after Braun was called out, and that should have ended there. But, we get our lemonade now.)
