Proposal: First pitch rule change
We talked about this a while back. I don't even remember who proposed any of this. I may have even proposed part of it. Anyway, I like the idea, and I'd like to see it implemented in the lower levels, to see how players behave.
Anyway, on a first pitch:
- called strike counts as two strikes
- called ball counts as two balls
- foul strike counts as one strike
All pitches at all other counts are counted the current way. What does this do? The batter is motivated to swing. And while the pitcher knows that the batter is motivated to swing, the pitcher also knows that if the pitcher nibbles too much, it's going to cost him. So, the pitcher is motivated to throw strikes.
The net result is that there should be more swings on first pitches. I think. If we end up with the balance shifting too much one way or the other, then we modify the rules a bit. e.g., If it goes too much the way of the pitcher, then the first pitch foul counts as no strikes.
Anyway, I'd love to see this in action.?
