Goalies in shootouts
?As far as I can tell, the NHL doesn't provide summary stats for goalies based on number of times they are in a shootout. That is, the have the number of goals allowed and saves made, but they don't provide a summary for shots that went wide.
It is ridiculous to NOT provide that result. Let me give you an exagerrated example: a goalie is on the ice for 100 shootout attempts, of which the skater scores 30 times, and he goes wide 70 times (0 saves). Another goalie is on the ice for the same number of attempts, allows 40 goals, and gets his pads on the other 60 shots (60 saves). Which goalie performed better?
Part of the job of the goalie is to make sure that the skater doesn't even have a good shot, and so if he forces the skater to shoot wide, he will get some that will go wide. This is a GOOD thing.
Naturally, no goalie will have such an exagerrated result (*). But, it's still a BIAS in the presentation of the data (which is why I used the illustration I did).
(*) So don't argue that point.
If someone can point me to a site that actually lists the data as I'd expect it, I'd be most appreciative.
