#FixTheWin Fixing the W-L loophole
?A few years back I had a suggestion that if a bullpen blows the lead for a SP, and the team subsequently wins, the SP should still qualify for the win. I kinda forgot that I brought this up with RotoValue, who actually has had a page dedicated to this for... I don't know how long, at least a year, if not more.
What is interesting here is what Bill James calls the "transference of wins". In 2017, 157 wins get transferred from the bullpen to the SP. When we do that, something appealing comes out of it: now 3/4 of the decisions goes to the SP instead of the current 2/3. Which is great because about 3/4 of WAR goes to SP. In addition, instead of the SP having a win% of under .500 (it was .491 in 2017), it goes above .500 (.514 in 2017). That is also great, because the average SP is an above-average pitcher. The new bullpen goes from .519 to .464.
