ARod: SS. Hawk: CF.
Andre Dawson has virtually as many innings in CF as Dale Murphy. They both established their greatness in CF.
Both eventually moved to RF. Dawson just happened to have been a better player for a longer period of time so that he spent more time in RF than CF. That was enough to pad Dawson's accomplishment enough to put him into the HOF and not enough for Murphy. This padding of accomplishment does not make Dawson a HOF RF and Murphy an almost-HOF CF. They are both CF.

ARod has 10,938 innings at SS, which is 720 more than at 3B. Once ARod plays more than half a season at 3B, he will have played more at third than short. Of his 116 WAR according to Baseball Reference (rWAR), he has 63.5 in seasons where he was primarily a SS and 52.5? when he was primarily a 3B (i.e., when Jeter was playing). Arod would need at least two more seasons at 3B to catchup to his SS performance, and even then, he'd likely get substantial time at DH.
Therefore, to the extent that you have this urge to pigeonhole players by single positions, then ARod is a SS. If you think of players are more fluid, then ignore this post.
