The Skuldelev ships are five original Viking ships recovered from the waterway of Peberrenden at Skuldelev, c. 20 km (12 mi) north of Roskilde in Denmark. In 1962, the remains of the submerged ships were excavated in the course of four months. The recovered pieces constitute five types of Viking ships and have all been dated to the 11th century. They are thought to have been sunk to prevent attacks from the sea. When the remains were unearthed, they were thought to comprise six ships, but "Skuldelev 2" and "Skuldelev 4" were later discovered to be parts of one ship.

(de)
  • Baineann longa Skuldelev (longa Uigingeacha) leis an aonú haois déag, nuair a d'fhág na Danmhargaigh roinnt constaicí i bhFiord Roskilde chun an phríomhchathair, Roskilde, a chosaint ar thaobh na farraige di. Scuitleáladh cúig long i gcaolas Peberrende in aice le Skuldelev, timpeall fiche ciliméadar taobh thuaidh de Roskilde. Baineadh aníos iad sa bhliain 1962. Cuireadh leatháin iarainn ina dtimpeall, taoscadh an t-uisce agus tógadh na longa amach ina mílte blúire, obair a thóg os cionn ceithre mhí. Ansin rinneadh na blúirí a chaomhnú agus a chur i dtoll a chéile, agus fuarthas neart eolais ar shaoirseacht bád agus long i ré na nUigingeach dá bharr. Síleadh ar dtús go raibh long bhreise (Skuldelev 4) ann ach fuarthas amach nach raibh inti ach cuid de cheann de na longa eile. I lár na nóchaídí bhí Iarsmalann Roskilde á méadú chun go bhfágfaí longa Skuldelev ann. Ag baint na cré dóibh i bhFómhar na bliana 1996 tháinig an lucht tógála ar iarsmaí long eile. Tugadh Roskilde 6 uirthi, agus bhí sí timpeall 36 méadar ar fad – an long Uigingeach is faide a fuarthas riamh. Thaispeáin an deindreacroineolaíocht go ndearnadh í timpeall na bliana 1025, agus socraíodh go gcuirfí í ar taispeáint in éineacht le longa Skuldelev. (ga)

Together, the five Skuldelev ships provide a good source of information about the shipbuilding traditions of the late Viking Age and are now exhibited at the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde. The museum has built accurate reconstructions of all five of the original Skuldelev ships; some of them have also been reconstructed by other groups across the world.
(it)
(pt)
