- Edgard Colle (* 18. Mai 1897 in Gent; † 20. April 1932 Gent) war ein belgischer Schachspieler. Colle war Berufsspieler und nahm im Zeitraum von 1922 bis 1931 an über 50 Schachturnieren teil. Fünfmal gewann er die belgische Landesmeisterschaft: 1922, 1924, 1925, 1928 und 1929. Bei der auch als inoffizielle Schacholympiade bezeichneten Amateurweltmeisterschaft 1924 in Paris belegte er den dritten Platz, noch vor Max Euwe. In einem Wettkampf in Antwerpen 1925 gewann er gegen George Koltanowski, der zu dieser Zeit der zweitbeste Spieler Belgiens war, klar mit 4:0 bei 3 Remisen. Seine größten Erfolge bei internationalen Turnieren waren erste Plätze in Meran 1926 (vor Spielern wie Dawid Przepiórka, Rudolf Spielmann und Savielly Tartakower) sowie in Scarborough 1930, wo er Géza Maróczy, Akiba Rubinstein und Mir Sultan Khan hinter sich ließ. Sein letztes Turnier war Rotterdam 1931, dort belegte er den zweiten Platz. Colle war zeitlebens sehr kränklich und konnte sein schachliches Talent daher nicht voll ausschöpfen. He scored excellent results in major international tournaments, including first at Amsterdam 1926, ahead of Savielly Tartakower and future world champion Max Euwe; first at Meran 1926, in a strong field ahead of Esteban Canal; and won twice outright at Scarborough in 1927, and again in 1930, ahead of Maróczy and Rubinstein. Colle's playing career was cut short by ill health. He survived three difficult operations for a gastric ulcer and died after a fourth at the age of 34 in Ghent. Hans Kmoch wrote that Colle "was not sentimental. He bore his sufferings as something quite private and of minor importance. He asked for no special consideration, he was always in good humor and a boon companion in company; but at the board he was a relentless fighter guided by a really ideal sense of duty and sportsmanship". Edgar Colle fu un professionista degli scacchi e un forte giocatore di torneo. La sua fama è legata principalmente al sistema di gioco che inizia con 1. d4, 2. Cf3 e 3. e3, universalmente noto come Sistema Colle, che egli introdusse e usò in molte partite durante gli anni venti e che dopo la sua prematura scomparsa fu propugnato dal collega e connazionale George Koltanowski.
