The original routing of Highway 22 passed through Watford and Strathroy until a more direct route was established in 1947. The function of Highway 22 was largely supplanted by the completion of Highway 402 throughout the 1970s. Accordingly, it was decommissioned and turned over to local jurisdiction in 1997 and 1998.
