  36. Online Appendix A High School & Beyond Data We obtain data on the academic performance of college students and on their incomes and expenditures from data collected by the National Education Longitudinal Studies (NELS) program of the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). The High School & Beyond (HS&B) survey covers the 1980 senior and sophomore classes (see United States Department of Education. National Center for Education Statistics 1988). Both cohorts were surveyed every two years through 1986. The 1980 sophomore class was also surveyed in 1992, at which point postsecondary transcripts from all institutions attended since high school graduation were collected under the initiative of the Postsecondary Education Transcript Study (PETS).31 We restrict attention to male sophomores that are surveyed at least through 1986.
