Is this paper shady or were the things the paper talk about shady?
Currently having trouble making sense of this paper I was sent by someone I respect. But I'm not so sure I trust the TLDR version source they heard before reading it. It's about the COVID vaccines (which I've supported) and has been retracted, but the authors are standing by what they said.
Got some major ADHD/stress brain fog going on and I'm needing some guidance: [more inside]
Covid-19 and Ehlers Danlos Syndrome
I have hEDS. For me, it's not too bad. I'm reading an article that (if I understand it) says the spike protein in covid (and the vaccines) damages collagen in a way that isn't an issue for most people but is for people with EDS. I have been getting all my shots. (I am also still masking fastidiously.) [more inside]
Important things to know about the human rabies vaccine?
I was vaccinated against rabies in the mid 2010s. I recall at the time hearing something important about it, something along the lines of - if you've had a rabies vaccine that has since worn off, and you get rabies, your rabies won't show up on a test. It wasn't that exactly, I don't think, but something similar, and of course I can't find it now because search engines are terrible.
Masking and vax proof, Rome 2023 edition
I'm going to be travelling internationally, to Rome, for the first time since the pandemic, right at the New Year. It looks like all testing requirements have been lifted at the border crossings into the EU, and there are no mask requirements for public transit in Rome, but what's the general vibe otherwise? Vaccine hesitancy anecdote
I'm looking for an anecdote that I've come across a few times on Twitter and/or Tumblr. It involves a doctor getting someone to agree to a vaccine by countering the patient's conspiracy theory with an even wilder one. Can you help me find it? [more inside]
Help me evaluate the COVID risk of returning to the office
Yet another COVID risk assessment question. tl;dr: Given that my toddler is in daycare, is my risk profile already so high that I shouldn't worry about the additional COVID risk from me returning to the office? [more inside]
What does it feel like to have the virus pass you by?
So you're fully vaccinated. You're exposed to someone with the coronavirus. You do not contract the virus. How does it feel when your vaccinated immune system successfully fights off the virus? Is this something you wouldn't even notice? Or could you feel off-kilter for a short term basis as your vaccine-trained immune system does its work? [more inside]
Which vaccine?
My five-year-old is due for a doctor visit next week. There is a recommended waiting period of two weeks between a flu shot and a Covid vaccine. So he will receive one if these (but not both) at the checkup. Which one should I ask for? [more inside]
COVID shots for someone with metal allergy
I recently learned that a neighbor of mine (older lady, smoker) has been unable to get any COVID vaccine because she has an allergy to surgical steel. Does she have any options? [more inside]
Best way to support Covid vaccines across the world
I'd like to use my resources to support the global vaccination plan. What's the best place for donations? Unicef? CoVax? Gates foundation? Red Cross? I'm in Canada, and it would be nice to get a tax receipt, but not crucial. What organization can use my money the most effectively, to give Covid vaccinations in the developing areas of the world?
What are your favorite social media vaccine explainers?

Need creative ideas for getting through extreme needle phobia
Does anyone have any slightly outside the box ideas for getting through overwhelming needle aversion, in order to get the COVID vaccine? I’m familiar with the standard tricks, but I need to pull out all the stops on this one. [more inside]
YANMD, but I have a COVID vaccine question anyway
I got the J&J shot in early March. On June 30, wary of the delta variant and the lack of data on J&J’s efficacy against it, I went ahead and got the first shot of the Pfizer vaccine at a local pharmacy. Should I get the second Pfizer dose? [more inside]

Anxious about making choices post-vaccine and managing relationships
I have been very isolated and am struggling with making decisions about how I will handle things when I am fully vaccinated in a couple weeks. Also trying to plan how I will navigate whatever boundaries I decide on with others in my life, who are reasonable but not as cautious as me. [more inside]
Vaccines and variants (hope me)

Vaccines and communicability.
I wish to know if one can be fully vaccinated and past all the vaccine milestones and still spread a disease. Obviously if I touch a puddle of Covid or breathe in a breath full of Covid I can spread Covid that way, but can my body (in general) still spread it through snot and whatever?
Cross Border Vaccination
As a US citizen living in Canada can I go to the US to get vaccinated? [more inside]
Question about the mRNA COVID vaccines
The mRNA vaccines cause our bodies to produce a spike protein which triggers the production of antibodies that wipe out both the spike protein and COVID. My question is: Could this mechanism deplete a natural reservoir of protein-building machinery that our bodies might rely on later in life? Do we even know, given that there is no data on the long-term effects of mRNA vaccines? [more inside]
Late-to-detect vaccine side effects
I am pro-vaccine and will get the COVID-19 vaccine when it's available to me. I also want to encourage my vaccine-hesitant friends to do so as well. One thing that concerns some of them is fear of long-term side effects that we haven't had time to see yet from the vaccine trials. Has that ever been an issue with other vaccinations? [more inside]
FluMist v. COVID-19
Virologist Robert Gallo recommends getting the live, attenuated nasal spray flu vaccine (FluMist) if you have the option, on the theory that the live virus will prep your immune system to mount a more effective response to the coronavirus (or anything else) in the months ahead.
This article came a bit late for me, as I already received a flu shot from my GP in early September. YANMD, but should I seek out the nasal spray version as well? It couldn't hurt, right? Or could it? [more inside]
How are vaccines for children tested and approved?
I think I understand the process for approving vaccines for adults - the 3 phases and the purpose of each, and the fact that adults can consent to being in a trial. But it seems testing vaccines to be given to children has both substantial ethical issues (how do we ethically pick someone to go first?) and recruitment issues (can you really find parents willing to have their kids participate?). So how do vaccine researchers navigate this? [more inside]
Reality of a vaccine
National leaders talk about when a vaccine will be "available." What does that mean with respect to the timing for widespread vaccination and a return to "normal?" [more inside]
Is there any reason not to get a BCG (tuberculosis) vaccine right now?
I've been reading that countries that universally vaccinate for TB are having better COVID outcomes. This is preliminary and correlational for now, but why wait? Is there any reason not to get the vaccine other than to avoid doctors' offices right now?
Vaccines for family members of newborns

Unvaccinated adult, travel, and measles outbreak
My 38-year-old partner's mum has just revealed they never vaccinated my partner against measles and whooping cough as a child. This is ahead of a holiday - with the mum- somewhere with a measles outbreak. I have a ton of questions, which include how to discuss this with their mum and where/whether to travel at all. How to debunk anti-vaccine sources?
Typically, the sources cited by anti-vaxxers to provide evidence that vaccines cause autism or are otherwise dangerous are not credible and thus easily dismissible. This Gish gallop of a Reddit post is something else, though—50 different links, many of them to NCBI or other academic journals. [more inside]
Looking for article about vaccines, autism, and family false memories
I remember reading an article about vaccines and autism that I want to share with someone and I can’t find it. The article examined some families’ claims that autism signs appeared in conjunction with vaccination; when contemporaneous home videos, photographs, and interviews with family members were examined, this turned out to be not true, and signs had appeared much earlier. I believe this article may have appeared in the WSJ or NYT in conjunction with a legal decision about the vaccine injury fund. Possibly as long ago as fifteen or twenty years ago.
Rabies shot for 15 year old cat
My childhood cat has not received any shots/vaccines since she left the shelter at 1 year old. She's now 15 and we've moved somewhere that requires a pet license. The license requires a rabies shot. What do I need to consider here? [more inside]

What are these amazing 67 vaccines?
I was chatting with someone who was anti-vaccine the other day in relation to the new California law, and she was telling me that there were now 67 vaccines that children had to take. I think she was trying to scare me, but actually I thought that sounded amazing! What are these 67 vaccines - and how can I get them for me and mine? [more inside]
Mom being drawn into anti-science/racist conspiracy thought please help
My mom is elderly. She and her husband support my mostly unemployed brother in his 30s. I live far away but talk to her daily. My sibling and his father are into racist, misogynistic ideas and believe the end of the world is coming. They stockpile supplies and make my mom read David Icke (anti-semitism thinly veiled as "reptile aliens" taking over the government) as well as how vaccines and GMOS are poisoning us. I tried to talk to her but she thinks what I say is hard to understand (academic language) so maybe science is hiding something. [more inside]

Why are non-vaccinated people a danger to public health?
In theory, if most of the public is vaccinated against measles, only other non-vaccinated people are put at risk by non-vaccinated people who get the measles (or other vaccine-preventable diseases). But apparently some vaccinated people are also at risk? Is this really the case? If so, how common/easy is it for vaccinated people to get the disease that they were vaccinated against, and how does this happen?

How important are all these vaccines for Peruvian travel?
I will be spending a month this summer in the high jungle plateau of Tarapoto, Peru. I am trying to get my preventative care in order, and will be getting Hepatitis A and typhoid vaccines, as well as taking anti-malarial medication. I don't think I will be getting the yellow fever vaccine, the Hepatitis B vaccine, or the rabies vaccine; the first due to lack of access and the latter two due to risk factors and cost, respectively. Would you try harder to find access to the yellow fever vaccine or rethink the other two, or am I good with the three I'm doing? [more inside]

Edmonston B, Measles, Vaccination?
I just finished reading an article from the New York Times Magazine about controversial anthropologist Napoleon Chagnon. One thing in particular about the article struck me- there is a claim (at least that's how I read it) that measles vaccine caused a breakout of measles in a group of isolated indigenous people that did not have measles exposure or immunity. I'm confused because I'm pretty sure you can't get measles from vaccine. Is there something different about the Edmonston B vaccine? [more inside]
