What other TV shows might I love?

Looking at my all time favorite "fun" shows, I notice most of them fall into a clear archetype: SF/F where a group of friends have an epic adventure. The friends are relatable and mostly likable. See inside for examples. [more inside]

Seeking informative but riveting programs to watch during exercise

Due to a running-related injury, I recently switched to riding a stationary bike. I've been watching shows like "The Walking Dead" while I ride, but I want to switch to something that will be informative and intellectually stimulating while also being suspenseful. Or, if not exactly suspenseful, then at least interesting enough to shift my focus away from the unpleasantness of exercising. [more inside]

Where to find this music or music like it?

I heard this funky bumper music in a Taxi episode (not sure if they call it bumper music but I hope so!) and wondered: Is there an extended version of this piece? More music like it even if from a different artist? Got a good vibe going, but couldn't find anything but the main theme song on Youtube. Thank you for any tips or suggestions.

Most-Acclaimed _____

I use three websites that tell me their version of the most acclaimed books, films or music. (But the music site focuses on Western popular music). Each site’s rankings are based on broad input from “best of” lists from elsewhere. I am interested in similar lists – with the same general procedure – for other things. [more inside]

Help me find this (detective?) show!

All we know is bits of the trailer and my mom is desperate to see it but didn't get the title or network. It has a vibe like the quirky detective shows that USA produced from about 2000-2010, but it seems to be new-ish. A man says something like "I can solve this case in ten minutes flat." The guy is arrogant or not clued into social cues in some way. Cut to a woman saying "That guy's an asshole." A woman who seems to be a professional colleague says, "Yeah, but he's legit hot." Any ideas?

TV shows with non-ordinary settings and characters

My college-age daughter wants to find a new TV show to get into, or maybe a fiction podcast, and she wanted me to see if you guys could offer any good ideas. She’s not interested in anything set in the ordinary real world, especially not high school. Apocalypse or post-apocalypse, dystopia, or science fiction would be great. The main thing she looks for in a show is at least one character she really likes. Her favorite characters tend to be outsiders who are quirky or different in some way and also very competent at something. [more inside]

Media featuring normal people with superpowers?

I'm looking for movies/shows/books that center around a protagonist who has superpowers but still lives a relatively normal life (no fighting supervillains, etc, superpowers used mainly for the hassles of everyday life). Particularly looking for psychics/people with telepathy because that tends to not be a great power for fighting evil, anyway. Also partial to workplace comedies because of how regular/normal they tend to be. [more inside]

Help me find TV/movies featuring smart, capable, complicated women

Hello! I just watched Unbelievable and was unexpectedly blown away and deeply, deeply satisfied by the relationship between the two lead detectives, played by Toni Collette and Merritt Wever. I had not known I was hungry for portrayals of women being awesomely competent, but apparently I am. So I am seeking more of that. Looking for TV shows and movies that I can binge-watch during the pandemic, that feature one or more smart, capable, ideally morally-complicated female characters in their thirties or older. Why no credits for music tracks used in episodes of Netflix shows?

Something I realized recently is that music tracks are not credited at the end of episodes of Netflix shows. This is particularly frustrating when I liked some music in an episode but then the track/performer is never listed in the credits. Why is this the case? What's the legal situation that allows them to not have to credit the music?

TV Recommendations for the Easily Distracted

Looking for TV show recommendations that are either really engaging right off the bat or really short (think either mini-serial or only has 1-2 seasons released to date). Something I can binge watch. I like drama, period drama, true-crime series, thrillers, Nordic noir, and also comedy and comedy-drama. But I do not have the time or inclination or attention span to watch something that requires a lot of time or attention investment, so nothing where I have to catch up on more than 3 seasons (i.e. Orange is the New Black, Wentworth) or that requires a lot of time to build up the story arc or jokes (i.e. Arrested Development). So really, I'm looking for something I can binge watch in a weekend, like a mini-series or a one to two season drama. [more inside]

Examples of movies (or tv shows) that deconstruct a genre

Last night while watching Logan for the first time I reflected that it reminded me of other movies that subverted and deconstructed the genre they ostensibly belong do, such as Chinatown, Frozen, Scream, and Unforgiven. This sort of thing really appeals to me, particularly if the deconstruction is cynical or fatalistic, or you get the sense in the end that watching any other movie from "genre X" is a waste of time until the genre is reinvented. Got any other examples? (vague and minor spoilers for Logan inside) [more inside]

Adult / Toddler friendly TV shows?

Our Friday night ritual is to watch a TV show with our two year old. So far we've been working through old Muppet Show episodes, and Wallace and Gromit, both of which she loves. However, us adults are getting a little tired of these and looking for something else to add into the mix. Where can I get hold of the tv series Black-ish from Australia?

I saw a few episodes of Black-ish on a plane recently and liked it a lot. I am subscribed to Netflix, and a VPN service, but it's not on any region there. I have an iPad and an android phone, but it's not available from iTunes for people in Australia, and I even downloaded the Amazon app, having heard it was an Amazon exclusive, but the bastards say "not available in your region" when I try to purchase it. They also seem good at getting uploads removed from the not-so-legal sites. I don't have a DVD or video player. Am I completely out of luck?
