What British TV drama does "I shall be in Inverness" come from?

When I was a kid I saw a strange British drama on PBS. There was an old man character who appeared to be a powerful, tyrannical businessman, but we gradually learned he was totally senile and the people around him were just indulging him. He would say "I shall be in Inverness" repeatedly. Any idea what this show could have been? [more inside]

Where to find "Brat Farrar" BBC Mini-Series?

The "Brat Farrar" BBC mini-series was broadcast within Masterpiece Mystery! on PBS in the 1980s. As far as we can tell, it has never been put on DVD professionally or on streaming. There are bootleg copies available but not good quality. We have a copy recorded on VHS but it would be nice to get a higher quality version. Does this exist? If so, where can we find it? My partner wildly adores New Scandinavian Cooking with Andreas Viestad. We can find an odd season or two on various services, but nowhere that's reliable and saveable and available on demand. I'd love to buy him a DVD set of all the seasons for his birthday (fine if we need a multi-region DVD player), but all we can find is this extremely odd Amazon listing. Please help?

Killed and Reincarnated CPB Programming?

Adam Beckman was a cameraman for the TV version of This American Life. He came up with an idea for a program called "Second Hand Stories." He said PBS is a place where good story ideas go to die, and what do to about that. [more inside]

Why does PBS show the same old music shows during fundraisers?

This is a cranky old lady question from a cranky old lady; whenever PBS has a fund drive, they take off the regular shows that I like and instead show old music specials or documentaries by Ken Burns they have already shown hundreds of times. I really do not want to see great hits of the 50s, Andrea Boccelli, or Simon and Garfunkle , and these substitutions make me less likely to contribute to the station, not more. Does showing these things again and again really get people to give money?

So little to go on

I have the vaguest of memories of a TV movie I may have seen around the mid-80s, possibly on public television. Could have been British, or at least set in the UK. It was somewhat creepy, at least it was to young me at the time. It was about a family wherein one of the boys had magic powers. My only real memory is a shot of this boy putting his hands into a kitchen counter as if the kitchen counter were soft clay or a portal to another dimension, drawing some material out of it, and making a little sculpture of an animal (lion?) Young me found that special effect surprisingly unnerving. I thought it might be a WonderWorks production but none of the titles seem to match. Ring any bells for anyone?
