Why no TextbookDB?
One of the best things to come out of the internet is the fine-detail documentation of media. Go on Wikipedia or IMDB, and films, books, even songs and individual chapters are listed. But weirdly, this doesn't cover everything. For example, the Holt Basic Reading System... (longer story follows) [more inside]
how to organize my inspiration/ideas digitally
i want a way to collect and search through all the artworks and other sources of inspiration i find but i can't seem to find anything that matches all my wants. preferably i'd like to find a website that already has everything i want because i'm lazy. although i wouldn't mind throwing something together myself and it would probably be better in the long term if i held all the files as opposed to relying on some other website. Antique graphic design questions ahoy
What is this semi-antiquated illustration *layout style* called? To be clear, I'm looking to identify the placement and structure of the images on the page in a regular and usually symmetrical fashion, rather than the style of the illustrations themselves. Is there a term for this type of layout structure? Catalog Style or something seems close, but I can't find any clear answers via the googles.

How to make an index of links for others to browse
I used to have a tumblr theme + plug in that created an index out of the post tags. I liked being able to index recipes and such, and liked that I could forward the whole site to others. I want to do this again, but can't find the theme, and the plug-in I was using is no longer. Alas. Any recommendations on how to do this?
Best Catalogs, esp. Museum Shops
I like catalog shopping, especially museum stores with arty gifts and cool jewelry. And the sort of catalogs whose list you get on because you're a PBS donor. I know about Novica, Metropolitan, Art Inst. Chicago, Smithsonian, Wireless, Signals, MuseumStore, others, but maybe you have some cool favorites.

Give me your best mom catalog sweatshirts!
My mother is in her early 60s and loves a very particular style of "old lady" catalog sweatshirts. She prefers prints of birds and cats and flowers. But the Country Store Catalog and Catalog Favorites are the only sites I'm finding. What search terms should I be using to find more of these? Recommendations for specific catalogs are welcome too. Thanks!
Dummy Catalog Data
I'm looking for data I could use to populate a library catalog that I'm building. A while ago, I posted this on Projects. Now I'm at the point where I'm working to build my own catalog to test it out. The only problem is that I need some records to fill it with. Ideally they would be between 10,000 and 30,000 and only books. [more inside]
A buttercup plant: Japanese library edition. Tell me more, please.
Record 1,000,000,000 (one billion) in OCLC's WorldCat is a plant in the buttercup family. The original entry in Chiba University repository is (both Japanese and English versions) mostly in Japanese, which unfortunately I don't speak. Struggling with Google Translate. Can you provide more information in English on this particular plant and/or catalog entry?

App for building an online shopping catalog?
I need to build an online shopping catalog (No Shopify--not what I'm looking for). I have a couple dozen items in the catalog that come in three colors. I need clients to be able to place orders in large quantities (like 1-250 items) but I'm not concerned about credit card processing. I just want an online app that allows them to view products and submit an initial order that's followed up with a personal phone call that allows me to upsell or suggest alternate product combos or flexible payment arrangement that fit their needs. I Guess You'd Call 'Em "Shadow Dichotomies"?...
I'd like examples of traits/personality types/habits/behaviors wherein most people fall into two or three "camps", none of whom are generally aware of the existence of the other(s). "Ask Vs. Guess Culture" and "Sit Vs. Stand to Wipe?" are two examples (a LOT of people are absolutely gobsmacked when they learn that Asking and/or Standing is not only an option, but a POPULAR option). I'm NOT interested in predefined typologies (e.g. the MBTI or Buzzfeedy "What Garden Implement Are You?" kinda stuff)... just ones that, 1. Arise kinda organically, 2. Involve Group A and Group B people frequently being unaware of one another's existence.
Catalog site cataloging niche catalog sites?
Is there a site that catalogs catalog websites? I'm thinking of sites such as Abandoned & Little-Known Airfields, Misericords of the World, and Bridge Hunter.
I could swear I once saw a site listing such sites. I want them all!
Software for a small (church) library
I am helping manage a church library and would like to update the catalog software. I am looking for these features. This is more for inventory purposes than keeping track of circulation. I don't mind programs that take a little bit of work to install.
Requirements
*Under $100 (free or cheaper is better)
*ability to scan UPCs using CueCat or phone
*must work with DVDs/videotapes
Nice to Have:
Export to web
Scanning with iPhone or android phone
ability to make bar codes for items not in an online database

MS Word / Excel 2011 for Mac catalog merge mystery
I have a batch of mixed-format data including long-form text fields, hyperlinks, number and plain text in an Excel doc. I have assembled a Word catalog merge file intended to allow me to proof the data manually. There are 42 records.
On merge, the output document results in what appears to be the correct number of pages and records. However, records 28-42 do not appear to place any data in the destination document. [more inside]

Looking for software to catalog work notes
I write a lot of notes for my work, which I type up to keep for my records. My current way to organize these notes is as separate files per day, labeled with the date and a descriptive title. This is decent, but doesn't allow me to easily reference old notes by topic, especially when there are numerous individual references under a single broader topic. Are there programs to help catalog notes and journals by themes, or cross-reference topics, in a vague database format? I'm working in Windows.

Online "flipping page" catalog viewer software recommendation
I'm looking for a "flipping page" online catalog viewer for print catalogs. Hoping to find something that will work for iPad, iPhone and Android. Ideally I'd like something self-hosted, but that is not a deal breaker. The ability to add image map-like links to URLs is needed. The source file is a PDF built in InDesign.

Her Permanant Record: Why did the LOC Know Her Real Name?
On last night's History Detectives, they were tracking down the real author and backstory of Diana: A Strange Autobiography (1939). During that investigation, Tukufu Zuberi went to the Library of Congress (paper) Card Catalog, and a slightly altered version of the author's real name was listed there after the published author's name. This leads me to several questions about LOC cataloging c. 1939: [more inside]
Help me remember a catalogue/company.
I'm trying to remember the name of a company from which I received a catalogue sometime back in 1996-1999.
They sold adventure/retro clothing/gear in sort of a J. Peterman style, but the catalogue presentation was more Orvis-y. The clothes/merchandise could also be compared to Abercrombie and Fitch from when it was an expedition/outdoor outfitter and not aimed at teens.
I remember one catalogue had a picture of an classic open car and they were participating/sponsoring in some sort of road rally or driving journey re-creation. [more inside]

Best Software (Free or Cost) to Catalog Divx Movies on a Mac
I am looking to catalog my DVD library (mostly of DivX movies). I own an IMac. Is Delicious Monster the way to go? I want to be able to simply enter the title of the movie and have it come up with the real box art and keep it in A-Z or numerical order. No more no less. I emailed customer service and they never responded so I am consulting the Metafilter Oracle on this one. If there is anything cheaper or free, I am open to that, as well. Until then....a loonnnnnnng Excel spreadsheet. Thanks for your time and have a good Halloween weekend, folks.
