Culinary Chemists Plz Assist
I have recently switched my mug size from 10oz to 18oz. Usually I have at least one mug of tea a day, brewed from a tea bag directly in the mug, no milk. What I am having trouble figuring out is caffeine. Obviously, if I brewed the tea in a pot and poured it into a mug, the 10oz would have almost half as much caffeine as the 18oz. But, since I’m brewing both mugs with one single tea bag, that doesn’t apply, right? [more inside]
Need to find something to replace the greatest tea that ever was
I am obsessed with a tea from David's Tea that they dont carry anymore. Is there a similar tea out there, or a way I can create something like it? I'm so sad! [more inside]
Caffeine Allergy or Sleep Apnea?
I had a small portion of coffee ice cream last night before bed, and every time I'd start falling asleep afterwards, I'd jolt out of it either gasping for air, or with my heart fluttering. My body wouldn't let me actually drift into sleep at all until several hours later. Is this a caffeine allergy/intolerance or sleep apnea (or both)? [more inside]
How best can I stay alert until 1:59 am and fall asleep at 2:00 am?

Switching from Soda to Coffee
I drink between 12 & 24 cans of soda a day. I have a few ailments and my doc wants me to lower the amount of soda I drink. She would prefer water, but knows that I don't like the taste of plain water or those droplet flavorings. As a compromise, she recommended trying to get into coffee and just have a few cups throughout the day.
Help me put on and take off training wheels. [more inside]
Replacement for caffeine in terms of staying regular?
I quit caffeine about a month ago, and I'd like to stay off it because my anxiety is much better now. The one problem I'm running into is with bowel movements. When I drank caffeine, I would usually go once before coffee and once after coffee, and I got everything out then and rarely even farted during the day. [more inside]
What will happen if I switch from tea to coffee?
I've never been a coffee drinker, but I may have to become, as I've noticed a profound impact of caffeine on my productivity. I generally drink a cup of green tea or yerba matte every morning. Please indulge my curiousity: What will happen if I replace this with 1-2 shots of moka-pot espresso in a cup of milk? [more inside]
Why don't they make painergy drinks?
You can buy energy drinks with caffeine and some taurine to cut the jitters. Athletes and high-performers drink often drink caffeine as a preworkout. The same group also takes painkillers for recovery or even for the event itself. And you can buy painkiller tablets, to drink with whatever liquid you want. Manufacturers also sell NSAID gels that you can rub on your body. So: Why don't they make drinks containing painkillers like ibuprofen? Or do they, somewhere, even with a tiny bit like < 10mg? Has this been tried in the past? [more inside]

Bean Roast Level for Arabic “Yellow” Coffee
So recently I have learned about Arabic coffee (qahwa/gahwa with cardamom) and I want to try making it at home! But apparently it requires extremely lightly roasted coffee beans, at least for the “yellow” style made in, say, Qatar. If I go to my local coffee bean roaster, who roasts the beans while you wait, what roast level should I ask for in order to make this style of coffee? Or should I just buy raw beans and try roasting them at home in a frying pan?
Really, just give me all your yellow/green Arabic coffee knowledge!

YANMD but why am I craving coffee?

wake me up (wake me up inside)
I just found out I have a medical condition that requires abstaining from any coffee, chocolate, or non-herbal tea (including green tea), caffeinated or decaffeinated, possibly forever. Giving up caffeine long term?
Has anyone here given up caffeine? I am about a month into not consuming any, and while I initially – once I cleared withdrawal – felt some benefit, I'm now second guessing this decision. I feel like, especially during the middle of the day, I'm lacking energy, something I would normally address with a cup of coffee. I'm sleeping/eating/exercising a decent amount, so there's nothing else obvious I feel I could change. I work an office job. Is this as good as it gets? Any advice? Stick with it? [more inside]

Last minute vacation ideas for Caffeine Detox? (<$1500)

Smoke a joint a day, that’s why they call it joint pain
After a recent conversation with my boyfriend about marijuana and pain relief (him: “... but I don’t HAVE pain every day”) I realized that my weird persistent joint pain is becoming an issue. How often can I use coffee to cure headaches before rebound headaches?
I HATE coffee, but in a moment of desperation I discovered that I can cure a headache with a shot of espresso. However, I know that if you do this "too often" you get rebound headaches. But I don't know how often is too often. Is 2-4 weeks apart ok or too much?
Caffeine sensitivity, hours later?
Can caffeine sensitivity symptoms show up inconsistently, and hours after consuming caffeine? However, I have a cup of coffee with breakfast daily and feel fine. [more inside]

The last two weeks have been the most miserable of my life. Some of it is definitely the anemia I'm going through. but I'm starting to think some of my pain is caffeine withdrawal. CAFFEINE!!! SO EXCITED!!
Are there any differences between different brands of caffeine pills? Are they all the same, and the price differences just reflect marketing and packaging? Pain on Left Side of Body Pain after Consuming Caffiene
Odd situation - And as a forward, I have been in contact with multiple physicians over this matter.
In years past I have noticed that half my body (limbs, abdomen, head) gets a very slight pain and heaviness after consuming caffeinated beverages. This could last for a few hours or close to days. I am trying to find out the mechanism to why this happens. [more inside]
The opposite of energy drinks
What products are on the market that are the opposite of energy drinks? Espresso vs Coffee - Why does my stomach handle Espresso and not Coffee?
Happy Friday MeFi,
I was wondering if someone could shine some light onto why my stomach freaks out when I have regular coffee (Dunks, Starbucks, Keurig) but doesn't scream when I have Espresso?
I can't quite wrap my heard around it, although I suspect it may have something to do with acidic content from instant-coffee, but whenever I try to have coffee from Dunkin Donuts or from one of those little Keurig cups, my stomach feels like it is being stabbed to death. It usually follows with a very painful stomach-ache for the next 30-45 minutes and then it goes away. However, if I use my work's espresso machine, it doesn't hurt my stomach at all. What gives?
This is probably not related, but I have similar issues when I drink beer but no issues when I drink Vodka or Tequilla.
Thanks for all your responses.
The worms crawl in and the worms crawl out
I am having a weird symptom lately that I don't know whether to attribute to depression, anxiety, or aging. Namely, I can't stop thinking about death and dying. I'm 26 and I am constantly thinking about how I could die at any moment and time is running out for me (and my loved ones). [more inside]

How to manage a no-coffee GERD diet while also needing to do shit?
Asking for a friend: I have been in a challenging engineering graduate program for about three years now. Two years ago, I was diagnosed with acid reflux / GERD. It seemed to be chronic but I found I could manage it with OTC medications and eliminating coffee and other caffeinated drinks from my diet. If I do this and don't overeat, I barely notice any symptoms. [more inside]
Reducing caffeine in tea
My pregnant wife wants to reduce her caffeine intake while still enjoying a few cups of tea each day so I suggested she follow the instructions in this Lifehacker post by brewing her tea for 30 seconds, throwing it away, then rebrewing with fresh water. She is skeptical that this works and would like to see additional evidence. Has anyone else tried this with success? Or have you come across another source that suggested it?
