Fancy Christmas brunch - Los Angeles edition?

I've lived here for decades but am suddenly finding myself at a loss - where might a small group (3-4 people) find a fancypants buffet brunch sort of thing in the LA area? Preferably downtown but Beverly Hills or Pasadena are also possibilities. [more inside]

Has the Maharaja in Harvard Square Resumed their Buffet Brunches?

The Maharaja Restaurant in Harvard Square used to serve these fabulous over-the-top brunches on the weekend. Those stopped during Covid, and I can't tell whether they have resumed. The website hasn't been updated. There are old, unanswered questions about it on Yelp. Has anyone from Metafilter been there recently? [more inside]

Consume mass quantities

What's the best American-style buffet in NYC or accessible via public transit from NYC? (We'd prefer not to go to PA or CT but I'll consider it.) Think Golden Corral, Hometown Buffet, Sizzler, or similar; we are specifically not looking for a Chinese or Indian buffet. Non-chain options are great. Cheaper is better.

Make your own fill-in-the-blank bar

Last year for my annual Halloween party I did a "make your own" macaroni and cheese bar, where I made a few pans of fancy mac and cheese and had a buffet of toppings available. It was a huge hit, and I'd like to do something similar this year. What are some other dishes I could do? [more inside]

Best buffet near the Bay Area?

My wife's been craving an extravagant Vegas-style buffet (or really, she's missing the hotel "viking" buffets of her homeland). What's the best way to scratch that itch near the SF Bay Area? Going more for quality/variety than just quantity, and a bit picky about Asian food (so places like Kome and Tomi don't look that appealing). Willing to drive 2-3 hours if necessary. Cliff House and Navio both look interesting but the latter especially is pricey and not sure how they compare. Any meal of the day would be fine, not necessarily brunch.

Dinner for 75

Every year we throw a Summer Solstice party that includes a buffet dinner for about 75 neighbors and friends. I cook everything because it's easier to do that than to organize a pot luck, which isn't part of my culture. Most years, I enjoy preparing this feast. This year, I am completely uninterested and fantasizing about ordering 25 pizzas and a keg. Hope me, please! [more inside]

Flower Power

After some great success with a lavender and blueberry sauce I was thinking it would be fun to have a whole party based around flower/flowering food and drink. I've got blooming flower tea and rose-infused vodka on the list, and my local market occasionally sells edible flowers around this time of year - but what are some other flower-based dishes I should be looking at? What should I be looking out for in terms of safety and not accidentally poisoning my guests? What kind of springtime courses would be in season? (For the sake of my sanity I'm going to try for buffet style small plates) And is there anyplace online or in the NYC area that specializes in edible flowers? [more inside]

Vegas with a cane

Over the past 5 years, my Mom, who is still working but of retirement age, has had both hips replaced and major surgery on her knee. She's been keeping up with the physical therapy, and while things were looking bad for a long time, she is now able to walk with a cane and is able to go places around town by herself again. She's also, understandably, stir crazy from not having been able to walk or go out by herself for so long. She suggested the possibility of meeting her in Vegas over the holidays. [more inside]

A 1% run on the banks

If the "top 1%" pulled their money out of the banking system and stored it in, say, a shoebox (a LARGE shoebox, I guess), would that crash the entire financial system of the country? What if only, say, Warren Buffet or Oprah pulled their money out? Would it have any effect on our banks?

Good breakfast buffet in Jackson/Pearl Missippi

Looking for good breakfast buffet recommendation - Jackson/Pearl Missippi area. A men's group from various churches in Illinois will be heading down via bus to Louisiana during the first week of March. En route, they will be coming into the Jackson/Pearl Mississippi area (I55 then heading south on to Ms State Route 49) at around 6:00 AM. Looking for a good breakfast buffet around the Jackson/Pearl area for ~50 men. Buffet preferred but a restaurant would be OK as a second choice. Any recommendations from the hive?

How do we control the excessive taking of food in our complimentary breakfast?

How do we control the excessive taking of food in our complimentary breakfast? My family and I own and operate a Comfort Inn. We offer a free continental breakfast: coffee, toast, bagels, frozen waffles (you just pop them into the toaster), apples, bananas and a lemon cake that we cut up into small slices. Frequently we have people who take it upon themselves to take way more than they need. We can understand someone taking a bagel to go for later in the day but these are guests who will take 15 extra plates, half a loaf of bread (I kid you not, just empty out the sack onto a plate and then take fifteen to twenty small packets of peanut better and/or cream cheese). My mother believes that we should place some carefully worded sign next to breakfast in the hopes that people will be considerate of others as well as management and only take what they will eat. Too often people take because they assume they have a right to take. How could we word such a sign without insulting the guests or make them feel like we're being rude? [more inside]

Croatia Online!

What is the best way to get unlimited net access in Croatia without per minute data charges? We're going to Croatia for a few weeks and will need reliable net access for VPNing back home. I'm fine with paying a bit extra for a temporary DSL/Cable install - we will be staying in a home so mobile access is not necessary. Something faster than 56k modem speed would be preferred.
