New Player Collection - Theoren Fleury

Most recent card added.
1998 Pacific Starting Lineup

I like hockey, and I love watching it on TV or in person but I'm not a hockey collector. I've had a good amount of hockey cards in the past, but those were disposed of years ago. I have maybe a handful left, most are in my trade box, and I still have a partial set of 1990 score. I've never really had a favorite team. I kinda liked the Ducks since they were close to home and I had been to games at the Pond, but I tend to lean more towards the Sharks if I had to pick one. I've really only had one favorite hockey player: Theoren Fleury.

Man was he something else to see.

Anyhow, I rediscovered a small stash of Fleury cards, in a plastic box, at the back of a drawer, and decided I'd add him to my Player Collections.

The first time I got to see him play in person was at The Pond on February 2, 1994, in the Ducks Inaugural Season. We went again on April 11. He was five seasons in already, but he was still just as fast and explosive as ever.

Calgary won the first game 4-2, Fleury had 2 shots-on-goal.
Calgary also won the second game 3-0, and this time Fleury had 1 goal (on a power play), 1 assist with 7 shots-on-goal. A great game to see!

Pocket schedule from the Inaugural Season.

And the program for the February 2nd game.

1990 Score #226

1992 Upper Deck #245
I got these both signed TTM sometime in the mid 90's.

Freed From His Plastic Cell

Some of you are about to say that I've committed a crime. You'll say that I've crossed a sacred line and that I deserve severe punishment, or at least banishment from the community. Some of you may want to divert your eyes, and read no further. Some of you may cry.

I'm about to bust this 1999 Kenner Cooperstown Collection Nolan Ryan.
First off, I did not actually pay the $19.99 sticker price, I actually got it for 50% off the sticker price. This was back around 2002 if I recall correctly. And nowadays these can be had for about the same price I paid for it.

I had zillions (or so it seems) of Starting Lineups, but space, loss of interest, donations, and timely profit have just about completely wiped out my collection. I think I have 3 pieces left: a 1994 JT Snow that I got autographed with my son when he was about 7, a 1995 Alex Rodriguez rookie piece (anyone interested?), and this Nolan Ryan.

I'm not interested in hanging it on a wall, but I like the figure and I especially like the card, so I'm busting it. But no worries, I'll do it respectfully.
See, that wasn't so bad. I'm not one of those guys that shreds the cardboard in two as the pieces inside go flying across the room. I actually used a razor blade to carefully pop the clear plastic off the cardboard backing, and slowly slid the figure (not doll) and card out.

He looks good standing on my red hutch.

Again, this is what I really wanted, a unique, sweet looking Nolan Ryan card to add to my collection. It's interesting that until I freed this card I never really considered it "part of my collection".

Everyone okay?

Have you ever busted something still mint in it's packaging when most people would have kept it intact?

Too Many Shapes And Sizes

Package from Too Many Verlanders that included items in all different shapes and sizes.

Standard sized Patriots cards.
I like the severed foot flying in from the right on Malcolm Butler's card.
Just in time for Halloween.

A Tim Salmon with a slide frame embedded.
Some really nice Tim Salmons actually.
Note the Wally Joyner Starting Lineup card, you'll see why below.

Grossly miscut 2013 Topps Heritage 50th Anniversary Buy-Back.
So cool though.  This is the only buy-back in my Angels collection.

Normal size and gargantuan checklists.
There were a bunch of these and some even larger poster-sized checklists.
Crazy.

2006 Upper Deck Sweet Spot Signatures #172, 14/99.
Super-thick.  Like paint stick thick.
Second thickest card in my collection.

1998 Donruss Studio 8x10.
Came in its own sheet protector.

1988 Starting Lineup Wally Joyner.
The figure that goes with the card above.
A bent-bat, ear-less, Wally Joyner.

I love it!

A Coronary From Too Many Verlanders

I received a box in the mail from Too Many Verlanders because we recently traded.
As I slowly opened the coffin shaped box, so as not to disturb the contents, which I assumed were baseball cards, an arm suddenly shot out at me, like the last sequence in the movie Carrie, and I screamed like a girl as I jumped back.
As fear griped my heart I thought I would die of a coronary right then and there.
ELIZABETH!!

Okay, I'm exaggerating, but you can clearly see the arm in there.
And I knew what was going to be in the box since we had discussed the trade already.

But I had to dig, dig with all my effort to free the individual that was buried under the avalanche of foam peanuts.
I knew time was running out that soon they would die the extreme death of suffocation.
My hands were bleeding from the frantic dig, fingernails torn or completely ripped off.

Yeah, yeah.
I basically blew like the Big Bad Wolf and peanuts went flying.

All in an effort to free the 1998 Kenner Starting Lineup Extended Jim Edmonds figure.
Jim looks great on a shelf at Command Central.

Ahhh, the Edmonds card I wanted so that I can check it off my Starting Lineup Want List.

Jim had just days before been freed from his plastic bubble on card stock, original packaging.
With much consternation Dennis and I discussed the idea of opening up the package in an effort to make shipping easier and more affordable, knowing full well that value of the piece would take a drastic hit.
I gave the OK since I would have opened it up when it got here anyhow.

I believe Dennis words on the attached note were,
"OMG I opened it!  It's worthless!"

Classic.

After the ordeal rescuing the Edmonds piece, I saw that I also scored on a bunch of Tim Salmons I needed and a stack of other Angels cards going back to 1976.

All good stuff.

This 1996 Pinnacle card is way cool.
It's made on that see-thru material, not sure what you call it,
and feature like the card says, the Team Nucleus.

But to think about that outfield of Anderson, Edmonds, and Salmon and what could have been.
Do you know who the Angels got for trading Jim Edmonds?
Kent Bottenfield and Adam Kennedy.
Bottenfield played in just 21 games and Kennedy played a key role in winning the 2002 World Series for the Angels, so maybe, given that, it was a worthwhile trade.
But Man, what could have been.

And lots of other goods.

Now I just need to go check my pants
after that terrifying experience.

The Starting Lineup For YOUR Anaheim Angels

Lucked out on snagging a handful of Angels Starting Lineup figures recently.
The complete set of all Angels Starting Lineup cards is one of my top 5 collecting goals.
These got me a bit closer to that goal.

I started out finding an auction on Listia for this 2000 loose Troy Glaus.

Best part was it came with the card.

Sharp design on this one.
Reminiscent of the 1986 Topps Mini League Leaders cards.

After I won the auction I asked the guy if he had any more, and sure enough he did.
He said he had a Classic Double and a Freeze Frame.

We settled on a GIN, he posted them and notified me, and ten seconds later they were both mine.

1999 Classic Doubles From the Minors to the Majors.
Darin Erstad edition.
Two figures and two cards.
Nice.

1999 Freeze Frame One on One
Two figures in one action pose and one card.
Nomar Garciaparra and Jim Edmonds.
Still nice.

I'm not concerned with collecting the actual figures so much as the cards.  The cards are what I mostly want.  But when I have to buy the figure in order to get to the card so be it.
Given that fact, these SLUs ended up like this:

Tore up.
I had to get past the figures to get to the cards right?

Lets check out the Classic Double.

Erstad in his minor league Lake Elsinore Storm uniform.

And in his Anaheim Angels uniform.

The card on the left is classic Starting Lineup style.
The one on the right...not much thought went into it.
The blurry Storm logo background is distracting, and Erstad is blurry as well.
Also, in the photo I would have liked to see more of the jersey front with the Storm team logo.

Lets move on to the Freeze Frame shall we?

Nomah and Edmonds mixing in up.
I'm calling Jim safe (I'm biased).
If Nomah didn't still have the ball in his hand I would assume he had already thrown it to first to complete the double play.
I'm also assuming he's coming down with the ball and hasn't touched the base yet.

Not a bad card.
The streaky background works pretty good in this case.
However, the picture makes no sense at all.

Anyhow, three cards closer to my collecting goal.
Check my want list if you have any available for trade.
