Warm-Up Activity Make a list of as many personality traits (ex: adventurous, shy, outgoing, etc.) as you can think of and circle those traits that you think contribute to mental health

Essential Questions What is personality and what are some common personality traits? What personality traits are associated with a mentally healthy person? How is personality formed and what role does heredity and environment play? How can you be assertive in non- threatening ways?

Check Your Wellness On page 23, rate yourself on the Check Your Wellness Activity After you have rated yourself, find a friend and have them rate you using the same scale and then compare answers

Personality What is personality? –It is the unique combination of traits that make you an individual These traits include behaviors, attitudes, feelings, and ways of thinking that are characteristic of you Outgoing or shy; angry or happy…

Activity Write your first name in large letters down the left side of a sheet of paper Next to each letter, write an adjective beginning with that letter that you feel describes you well After you have done this for each letter in your name, circle the adjectives you are most proud of and put a line through those you would like to change

Describing Personality Terms –Extrovert A person who is friendly and outgoing –Introvert A person whose thoughts and feelings are directed inward –Optimist Someone who focuses on the positive side of things –Pessimist Someone who looks at the negatives and expects the worst

Describing Personality Terms –Assertive Someone who is able to stand up for themselves and express their feelings in a nonthreatening way –Passive Someone who holds back their feelings and yields to others –Aggressive Someone who communicates their ideas and feelings in a forceful or threatening way

The Healthy Personality Mental health is the state of being comfortable with yourself, with others, and with your surroundings People who are mentally healthy are: –Realistic about their strengths and weaknesses –Able to take on the responsibilities of daily living –Caring toward themselves and others –Able to handle disappointments and learn from them –Able to feel enjoyment and a sense of achievement

The Healthy Personality Mentally healthy people tend to be friendly, optimistic, and loving They are also able to be assertive, laugh at themselves, try new experiences and strive to do the best they can

How is personality formed? Most personality traits are influenced by a combination of both heredity and environment

Heredity Early differences are evidence that infants are born with distinct temperaments or tendencies to act in certain ways Some babies kick and move around a lot inside their mothers, while others are relatively quiet

Environment Most personality traits are modified by a person’s environment Your friends, family members, school, and cultural group all affect your personality Modeling is copying the behavior of others Your friends, who are about the same age and share similar interests, are known as your peer group By young adulthood, your personality traits are fairly well established
