Baseball is a bat and ball sport played between two teams of nine players each. The goal is to score runs by hitting a thrown ball with a bat and touching four basses arranged as ninety-foot square or diamond. Players on the batting team take turns hitting against the pitcher of the field team, the field team tries to stop the batting team from scoring runs by getting hitters in several ways. The teams switch between batting and field whenever the field team makes three outs. One turn at bat for each team makes one inning; nine innings make up a professional game. The team with the most runs at the end of the game wins.

Baseball is played between two teams of nine players, under the authority of one or more officials, called umpires. There are four bases. First, second and third bases are cushions, and the fourth base (home plate) is made of rubber. they form a square with sides of 90 ft called a diamond. The playing field is divided into three main sections: The infield, containing the four bases, is for defensive purposes and is within the grass line The outfield is the grassed area beyond the grass line between the foul lines, and bounded by a wall or fence. Foul territory is the area outside the foul lines. The pitcher's mound is located in the center of the infield. The pitcher must have one foot on the rubber at the start of every pitch to a batter, but the pitcher can only leave the mound area once the ball is released. At the college/professional level, baseball is played in nine innings in which each team gets one turn to bat and try to score runs. High school baseball plays seven innings. An inning is broken up into two halves in which the away team bats in the first half, and the home team bats in the bottom second half. The winner is the team with the most runs after nine innings. If the home team is ahead after the top of the ninth, the game does not continue into the bottom half. In the case of a tie, extra innings are played until one team takes the lead at the end of an inning.

Batting averages judges how good a hitter is. A batting average is a ratio. It compares the number of hits a player gets to the number of chances he had. Many Ramirez batting average is.300, if he stepped up to the plate for the 60th time this season and he scored a home run, and its his 20th hit of the year you would find his batting average by dividing the number of hits by the number of at-bats: 20 hits ÷ 60 at-bats =.300 this means he hits 30 percent of the time. It's the same as 30 out of 100, or 30/100. If you reduce the fraction, you get 3/10. That means Ramirez hits in 3 out of every 10 at-bats. Here's an example of a weaker average: 40 hits ÷ 200 at-bats =.200 A.200 average is 20% or 2 hits out of every 10 at-bats.

The distance a baseball depends on two primary factors: the angle at which the bat hits the ball, and how fast the ball is hit. The speed of the ball depends on both the speed of the pitch and the speed of the bat. If the bat is standing still and the ball hits it, the ball will bounce off the bat with most, but not all, of the pitch speed. If the ball is standing still and is hit by the bat, it's given a good portion of the bat's speed. Combine the two and you can see that a pitched ball hitting a swinging bat gains a good portion of the sum of both the pitch and the bat speed.
