P U1 F3 U1 IN POSITION A PLATE: Behind the catcher. U1: In foul territory 10 feet behind F3. Fair/Foul Responsibilities Plate -- Front edge of 1 st base bag, and all the way to the foul pole up the 3 rd baseline. U1 – Front edge of 1 st base bag to the foul pole.

U1 P U1’s Outfield Plate’s Outfield FLY BALL/LINE DRIVE RESPONSIBILITIES PLATE: F8 to his right toward the left field line; F7 in all cases; When U1 does not go out, has all the calls in the outfield. F1,F2,F3,F4,F5,F6 U1: F8 coming in, going back, and going toward the right field line; F9 in all cases. F3,F4 going to their left.

U1 P FLY BALL OR LINE DRIVE TO RIGHT FIELD U1 GOES OUT PLATE: Come out in the direction of the play; Has the BR’s touches of 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd, and home, if U1 cannot get back to cover home; Path should keep you ahead of the BR. U1: Reasons to go out: 1.F8 or F9 are running hard in towards the infield as if to make the catch on the dead run or dive to make the catch; 2.F8 or F9 turns his back to the infield and is moving towards the outfield wall; 3.F8, F9, and a infielder are converging on the ball; 4.F9 is running toward the foul line and a fair/foul decision may be needed; 5.Infielders are going back on the ball and it could possibly drop in. Communicates to PLATE that he is going out, “I’m going out!” or “I’ve got the ball!” Gets the best distance and angle he can to make the call; Slows to a virtual stop when the play is about to occur; Comes to a complete stop if a fair/foul decision is to be made; The fair/foul signal will be made before the catch/no catch signal is made; Remains out if there is any chance the ball will go out-of-play; After determining that the ball will not go out-of- play, turns, watching the ball, and hustles home, in foul territory; Once he has reached home he should tell PLATE, “I’ve got home!” INITIAL MOVEMENT SECONDARY MOVEMENT BALL FLIGHT

U1 P FLY BALL OR LINE DRIVE TO RIGHT FIELD U1 DOES NOT GO OUT PLATE: Come out in the general direction the batted ball; Come out no further than an imaginary line between 1 st and 3 rd on a routine catch/no catch; Obtains the best angle to observe the catch/no catch; Does not need to give a signal on a routine play, but should inform U1, “That’s a catch.”; Signals “safe” if no catch (no verbal call); On a difficult catch/no catch should move out as far as possible; Should be virtually stopped to make these calls. U1: Pivots and observes the BR’s touch of 1 st ; React to BR going back into 1 st or advancing to 2 nd. INITIAL MOVEMENT SECONDARY MOVEMENT BALL FLIGHT

U1 P PLATE: Move up the 3 rd base line as far as deemed necessary to rule on the play, but never so far that there’s not time to return and set up for a potential play at home; Make a verbal call, “That’s a catch!” and a visual ‘out’ signal if it is a difficult catch is made; If a fair/foul ruling is needed, signal fair/foul and then catch/no catch; If no catch, a visual “safe” signal is given (no verbal call); Should be stopped to make this call; Moves into position to cover a play at 3 rd after making his ruling. U1: Pivots and observes the BR’s touch of 1 st ; React to the BR back into 1 st or advancing to 2 nd. U1: Let F3 clear; Turn and move up the baseline as far as needed; Straddle the baseline; Come to a complete stop before making the fair/foul and catch/no catch calls; After making the calls move to cover home if necessary. U1 P Stands POPUP BEYOND 1 ST BASE TOWARD THE STANDS U1 HAS THE CATCH/NO CATCH Plate: Observe the BR. U1: Let F3 clear and then move to get an angle on the play; Be sure the ball does not touch the fence as it comes down; If the ball is over dead ball territory and someone interferes, there is NO interference; If the ball is over live ball territory and someone interferes, there IS interference. P U1 BASE HIT POSSIBLE TRIPLE PLATE: Clear F2 and move into fair territory; React to the BR going to 2 nd by moving into position to cover 3 rd. U1: Come in and pivot, taking the BR into 2 nd ; If the BR goes to 3 rd, rotate to home communicating with partner, “I’ve got the plate!” Do not commit to home until sure the BR is going to 3 rd. U1 P GROUND BALL PLATE: Trail the BR up the 1 st base line to the 45’ line; Be in position to observe the pulling of a foot or a swipe tag; If the ball gets by F3, observe the ball and be sure it does not go into dead ball territory; If the ball does not go into dead ball territory, move to cover 3 rd. U1: Establish a 90 degree angle to the expected throw; Let’s the throw turn you toward the base; Rule safe or out; If the play is close, safe or out, “sell” the call; If there is a tag, say, “Out on the tag.” If the foot is pulled, give a sweeping motion with both arms and saying, “You’re off the bag.” When appealing to Plate for a pulled foot, ask, “Did he pull his foot?” When appealing to Plate for a swipe tag, ask, “Did you see a tag?” If the ball gets by F3, move in behind the BR and move to 2 nd as quickly as possible. P U1 BUNT PLATE: Clear the catcher while watching for batter interference or catcher obstruction; Straddle the line and rule fair or foul if the ball is near the foul line; Trail the BR up the line to the 45’ line; Responsible for a running lane violation; Be alert for appeal of pulled foot or swipe tag; If the ball gets by F3, observe the ball and be sure it does not go into dead ball territory before moving to cover 3 rd. U1: Move into position out of the line of the throw; If there is a tag, say, “Out on the tag.”; If the foot is pulled, give a sweeping motion with both hands and arms and saying, “You’re off the bag.”; Rules safe or out on the BR; If the ball gets by F3, move in behind the BR and move to 2 nd as quickly as possible. P U1 R1 TROUBLE FLY BALL TO RF U1 HAS THE CATCH/NO CATCH Plate: Move up the 3 rd baseline; React to take R1 into 3 rd if there is no catch; If the ball is overthrown at 3 rd, retreat to home in fair territory. U1: Move to get the best angle possible to observe the catch/no catch; DO NOT cross the dirt; Rule catch/no catch with a visual signal; React to take R1 into 2 nd if there is no catch, or back into 1 st on a catch.
