22 Ana wanted a hamster more than anything else in the world. Her friend Beth had a hamster named Harry. Harry was brown and white, and he loved to munch carrots from Beth's hand. Ana had asked for a hamster for her birthday, but all she got was a card game and a new book. Those were good presents, but they were NOT a hamster. Ana had said thank you with a big pout. "Ana," her mother had said, "having a pet is a big responsibility. Pets have lots of needs. Hamsters need shelter, and do you know what they eat and drink?" Ana did know. She had been paying close attention to how Beth took care of Harry. She just needed a way to show her mom she was ready for a pet. One day Beth and her family went out of town. Beth asked Ana to take care of Harry while they were away, and Ana's mom said it was OK. This was just what Ana had been waiting for. Now she could show her mom that she could take care of a hamster. Every day for a whole week, Ana fed Harry. She kept his water bottle full and his cage clean. She gave him carrots to munch from her hand. Ana's mom gave him carrots to munch too. Ana was so happy she gave her mom an extra-tight hug. When it was time for Harry to go home, Ana felt like crying. Ana's mom was sad too. Ana could hardly believe her ears when her mom said, "Ana, let's go to the pet store. It's time you had a hamster of your own." Character
