Bratsk (Russian: Братск, IPA: [bratsk]) is a city in Irkutsk Oblast, Russia. It is on the Angara River near the Bratsk Reservoir.
History
[change | change source]The first Europeans went to the area in 1623 to get taxes from the local Buryat people. Permanent settlement started with the building of an ostrog (fortress). This fortress was built in 1631 at the junction of the Oka and Angara rivers.[7]
During World War II, Siberia became more industrialized. This was because the Soviet Union wanted to move its industry to the area east of the Ural Mountains.
